SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team clinched a series victory over Cameron with a 2-0 victory in game one before dropping the finale 5-3 at Mayer Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Rambelles will now face Texas A&M-Commerce in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Tournament on Friday, April 29 at 1:30 p.m. in Canyon, Texas. ASU finishes the regular season with a 35-20 record and 20-6 at Mayer Field. The Aggies are now 33-20 overall and 18-14 in the LSC.
"This weekend was huge for regional rankings," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "To come out and beat a good Cameron team three out of four times was big. We were one swing away from possibly sweeping but I was proud of the way battled late in game four. It was a good weekend especially getting three out of four."
The Rambelles jumped out early with a run in the bottom of the first. Bailey Wallace took a pitch back up the middle to score Alexis Evans from second base.
The lead was increased in the bottom of the second after Lanie Robinson led the inning off with a single to right center. Ciara Sheppard, who went 3-for-3 in the game, hit a RBI single to right field to make it 2-0 after two innings. Â
The Aggies would threaten to tie the game with runners on in the fifth and sixth but Brandy Marlett and the Rambelle defense took care of the rest. Â The sophomore limited Cameron to just two hits over seven innings and struck out eight for her fourth shutout of the season. The Henderson, Nevada native won her 17 game of the season and the fifth time in her last eight starts she has not given up a run.
Cameron built a 5-0 lead in game two through the first six innings. The Rambelles were limited to just one hit through the first six innings of the game.
Down to its final three outs, ASU found a spark. Taegan Kirk hit a ground rule double to center field to put runners at second and third.
Robinson stepped to the plate in her final at-bat of her career at Mayer Field and singled to left field to score Wallace and Kirk. Kelly Johnson cut the deficit to 5-3 with a single to right field. The Rambelles had runners on the corner and Kenedy Urbany hit a deep fly ball that was caught at the warning track for the final out.
Ambra Hill and Lanie Robinson finished with a 75-26 career record at Mayer Field.
"These two have been through a lot," Scott said of the two seniors. "They came in the season after we were one win away from the national tournament. We had to rebuild a little and I think they had a class of six or seven and they are the only two left. I am proud of what they have accomplished on and off the field. I'm happy they stuck it out and believed in this program."
The Rambelles will now set their sights on the LSC Tournament held in Canyon, Texas on Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30.
