GUNNISON, Colorado – The Angelo State soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to Colorado Mesa on Wednesday afternoon in Gunnison, Colorado.
The Belles (3-1-1) were outshot 13-8 overall but held a 5-4 shots on goal advantage. Six of ASU's eight shots came in the second half. The Mavericks (2-2-1) made five saves while ASU made three.
"We didn't perform as well as we should have today," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "I thought our individual defending as a whole wasn't great today and our forwards have to be able to score moving forward for us to be successful. The surface was very tall and a struggle for us but Colorado Mesa played on the same surface and found a way to be successful."
Colorado Mesas scored the only goal of the match in the 34th minute. CMU's Amanda Wenzel found Heidi Wendt for a goal to put the Belles down 1-0. It was the first time ASU has trailed all season.
Elizabeth Rodriguez had an opportunity to tie the game with a penalty kick but CMU made a save in the 68th minute. Loni Byers tried to tie it again in the 69th minute with one of her three shots on goal but the CMU goalkeeper made one of her five saves.
Byers led ASU with three shots and all three were shots on goal. Rodriguez added two shots while Demi Tsambasis, Kathleen Keoughan and Cynthia Andrews each had one shot. Sammy Cude made three saves and the goal was the first the freshman had allowed all season.
The Belles return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. with a match against Western State.Â
