Rams Fall in First LSC Matchup

STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State football team was defeated by Tarleton State 35-3 on Saturday evening at Memorial Stadium in Stephenville.

The Rams (1-2, 0-1 LSC) were limited to 222 yards of offense and only 87 through the air. The Texans (1-2, 1-0 LSC) gained 389 yards of total offense and scored 13 points of five ASU turnovers.

Josh Stevens became the first Ram to gain more than 100-yards in a game with 128 yards on 23 carries. Donovan Thompson caught five passes for 58 yards. The Rams special teams blocked three kicks. Markus Jones added to his national lead with his fourth of the season while Richard Franklin and Grant Peterson each made a block. Melvin Robinson led the defense with 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

The Rams had the first chance at points late in the first quarter. Stevens carried the ball four times for 19 yards to move the ball inside the TSU 25. After a pair of runs from Ronald Winston, ASU was in the red zone but the drive stalled and Casey Eyman came on for a field goal. The junior pushed the ball just right of the upright for his first miss of the season.

The two teams continued to trade punts until the Rams were able to move the ball. It was the ground game as Jake Faber and Josh Stevens combined for 31 yards on the ground. Faber connected with Carl Dorsey Jr., to move the ball inside TSU territory. With the ball at the 24, Eyman was true on a kick from 41 yards for a 3-0 advantage. It was a season long for the junior and longest kick since Rhett Peterson hit a 42-yard field goal in 2013.

The Texans answered but the Ram defense was able to limit the damage. TSU was deep in ASU territory at the 14 yard line but Fred Lawrence stopped Joseph Sadler for an eight yard loss. The Ram defense then forced an incomplete pass to force a fourth down. Sergio Sroka connected on a 39-yard field goal to tie the game at three.

TSU pulled ahead late in the second quarter after an ASU punt was blocked. TSU's Zed Woerner found Bubba Tandy on a 38-yard strike for the score. One of three extra points on the night was blocked by Richard Franklin to make the score 9-3 at half.

ASU held TSU to just 114 yards in the first half with only 23 coming from the ground. The Rams gained 96 yards on the ground in the first half and Stevens had 83 of his season high 128 yards in the first half.

The Rams defense forced an interception for the third straight game to open the second half. Woerner threw towards the end zone but Lawrence went up to make the interception and give the ball to the Rams at the ASU 20.

TSU would get the ball back after an ASU fumble and extended its lead to 15-3 on a 12-yard pass from Zoerner to Tandy.

The second blocked extra point of the night provided a spark for ASU. Grant Peters was able to bust through the line and block the kick. With the ball rolling around, Lawrence picked up a loose ball and returned it to score two points for the Rams.

The Texans picked off Faber for the second time on the night and would score on the ensuing drive to put Tarleton State up 22-5.

After a three and out by the Ram offense, TSU scored on its second play from scrimmage. Sadler busted through the middle and scampered 73 yards for the score.

Tarleton State would add one more touchdown in the fourth quarter to make the final 35-5.

TSU's Sadler led all rushers with 151 yards on the ground while Curtis McGregor ran for 76 yards and two touchdowns. Woerner threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns on 11-of-25 passing.

The Rams will play their first home game of the 2016 season against Eastern New Mexico on Saturday, Sept. 24.
