Belles Defeat West Texas A&M 2-1

CANYON, Texas – Angelo State's Ally Warren scored her first career goal in the 85th minute to give ASU a 2-1 over West Texas A&M in Canyon on Friday night.

The Belles (6-2-1, 2-1-0 LSC) dominated the stat sheet once again taking a season high 27 shots. A total of 18 were on goal which is another season high. The Lady Buffs (3-4, 1-2 LSC) took 12 shots on the night but only five were on goal.

"I thought there were a lot of good things after we made some adjustments," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle. "Our finishing could still use some work. We are creating chances especially with 27 shots tonight but if we can start finishing we are going to be dangerous."

Warren provided the game-winner after West Texas A&M tied the match in the 81st minute on a goal from Kaitlin Steele. ASU had possession deep in WT territory and Kathleen Keoughan was fouled outside the box.

"We had talked about needing one player to go in and pressure the ball," McCorkle said. "Kathleen (Keoughan) works her tail off and used her body to get in position for the ball. The defender was impatient and fouls her that creates  the Ashley (Exford) free kick."

Exford stepped to the free ball and sent it toward the penalty area. Warren cut in front of her defender and sent the ball inside the far post past WT's goalkeeper for the game-winner in the 85th minute. It is the freshman's first career goal and first game-winner.

"I was really pleased with how we responded after WT scored the goal to tie the match," McCorkle said. "We had a chance to clear that goal and we didn't do it. I thought we had a lull for a few seconds but were able to come back and get the game-winning goal. I was really happy for Ally to get that goal for us tonight."

After a scoreless first half, the Belles broke a scoreless streak of 182 minutes to take a 1-0 advantage. Demi Tsambasis scored her LSC-leading eighth goal of the season in the 75th minute after. Analise Watson banged a shot off the cross bar and Tsambasis was able to bury the rebound into the net. Watson was credited with her first assist of the season.

Tsambasis led all players with eight shots and five shots on goal. Haley Mendel added four shots with three on goal and Mogan Sibson and Elizabeth Rodriguez each finished with three shots and two on goal. Lauren Perry took two shots while Exford, Analise Watson, Shay Williams, Megan Allen, Peyton Walter and Warren each recorded one shot a piece. Sammy Cude improved to 5-2-1 with the win.

The Belles will now travel to Eastern New Mexico for a match on Sunday scheduled at 2 p.m. CST.
