COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado – The No. 16 Angelo State soccer team shutout Adams State 2-0 on Sunday morning at Mountain Lion Stadium to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Belles (2-0) recorded its first shutout of the season limiting Adams State to four shots on goal. ASU took 15 shots with eight shots on goal and forced four corner kicks.
"I thought we had another great start," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "I thought we controlled a good portion of the match. We may have had some tired legs due to the travel but I thought the players stepped up to maintain the lead and get the shutout."
Sammy Cude recorded her first shutout of the season by making four saves with three coming in the second half. It is the freshman's first career win and first career shutout.
"I thought Sammy (Cude) did a good job today," McCorkle said. "Lauren Eshelman has played great but we thought Sammy's height would help her against Adams State. For Sammy to get a shutout in her first start was pleasing."
Demi Tsambasis provided a quick start for the Belles. Trenadey Scott was pushing the ball inside the left side of the penalty area and found Tsambasis cutting to the right post inside the six-yard box for a goal in the sixth minute for a 1-0 advantage.
"Trenadey is a player that can threaten the space behind the defense and it opened up opportunities today especially on the first goal," McCorkle said. "When she does that it is really beneficial for our team. She has had a great start for us especially for a freshman and we want to see her continue it."
The Belles offensive attack created their second goal and first goal off a set piece of the season in the 27th minute. Shay Williams sent a corner kick towards the goal and Tsambasis leaped in the air to head the ball in the net for a 2-0 lead. It was Williams' first assist of the season and Tsambasis' fourth goal of the season.
"The second goal off the corner kick is something we have been working on with Demi to jump earlier," McCorkle said. She was able to get above the ball and head it down and that was a fantastic goal. It was great to see her have courage and use her head to score on a corner kick."
Eight different Belles took a shot with Tsambasis leading the way with four. Tiffany Dang, Kathleen Keoughan and Scott each had two shots while Haley Mendel, Eryn Harrington, Laia Pujades, Morgan Sibson and Judith Verdaguer recorded one shot.
The Belles will host Fort Lewis for their home opener on Friday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the ASU Soccer Field.
