SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball earned a pair of shutouts beating Emporia State 7-0 and Texas A&M International 4-0 on the first day of the George McCorkle Challenge at Mayer Field on Friday.
The Rambelles moved to 6-1 on the season limited teams to a .109 batting average and only gave up five hits. ASU scored 11 runs on 14 hits and drew eight walks.
"It was a great day at Mayer Stadium," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Kenedy and Brandy were both spot on and we played great defense behind them. I liked the way we competed in the batter's box today. We are hoping for a big crowd tomorrow and two more wins."
The home opener saw Kenedy Urbany get the start and she responded in a big way. The senior threw her first shutout of the season and held Emporia State to four hits. She struck out two batters and got out of two on no out jam in the fifth.
The offense came through for Urbany in the third. Madison Greenwell and Bailey Wallace hit back-to-back single and Urbany drew a walk to load the bases. Freshman Courtney Barnhill singled to centerfield to plate Greenwell and Kirk followed it up with a bloop single to score Wallace.
Up 2-0, the Rambelles blew the game open in the fifth. Alexis Evans hit a two-RBI double to right field for a 4-0 lead. Danae Bina singled to left field before Karina Rocha got the crowd on their feet. The freshman crushed a ball to opposite field for a three run home run. It is the freshman's second of the season and put ASU up 7-0.
Urbany improves to 2-0 on the season with a 0.37 earned run average.
Game two had another stellar pitching performance. Brandy Marlett limited Texas A&M International to just one hit in 6.2 innings pitched. She struck out nine and is now tied with Claudia Lopez for the most strike outs in a career in ASU history with 386. Â The junior didn't allow a walk and only faced one batter over the minimum.
Barnhill gave Marlett the only run needed in the top of the first. Wallace doubled down the left field line and scored on a RBI single by Barnhill for a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Angelo State added insurance runs in the fourth. Evans, Bina and Rocha drew three consecutive walks to load the bases.Brooke Mangold picked up her first RBI of the season bringing home pinch runner Kelly Johnson on a fielder's choice. A defensive error allowed Greenwell to reach and allow Bina to score. Greenwell was caught in a run-down but Mangold took advantage and scored to make it 4-0.
Marlett sat the Dustdevils down in order in the fifth and sixth and had a streak of 14 straight. Morgan Hill came in for the final out and the 4-0 victory.
The Rambelles return to the field tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. against Adams State and at 3:15 p.m. versus Emporia State at Mayer Stadium
