SILVER CITY, New Mexico – The No. 21 Angelo State softball team scored the second most runs in a single game in program history defeating Western New Mexico 22-2 in five innings on Friday afternoon in Silver City.
The Rambelles (14-1, 4-0 LSC) recorded 19 hits and 22 runs with 12 coming in the first inning alone. Eleven different ASU players had at least one hit and 13 crossed the plate. The Mustangs (0-15, 0-4 LSC) were held to five hits in the loss. The 12 runs in the first inning in the second most in a single inning in program history with the record of 13 being set against UTPB in 2008.
"I was proud of the way we came out and started the game," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "After a long road trip of 10 hours, I thought we came out and played really well. It says a lot about the composure of this team. Kenedy (Urbany) was able to throw strikes obviously scoring 12 in the first inning is going to give you confidence in the circle."
Courtney Barnhill went 4-for-4 on the day with six RBI and four runs scored and two home runs. The six RBI, four hits, two home runs and 11 total bases are tied for the second most in a single game in ASU history. Taegan Kirk and Katlyn Herzog each had three RBI and two hits. Bailey Wallace went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
The first run of the game came across the plate by way of a bases loaded walk from Barnhill. Two batters later, Kirk hit a single up the middle to score two. Kelly Johnson's single to left field scored two more runs to put the Rambelles up 5-0. Bailey Wallace had a hit a two-RBI single up the middle and Kenedy Urbany added two RBI with a double to left field. Barnhill cleared the bases with a two-run home run to increase the lead to 11-0. It is the freshman's fourth home run of the year. Karina Rocha hit a ball to right field and slide into third for her first career triple and Kirk added another RBI with a single to centerfield.
Urbany held WNMU scoreless over the first two innings and only allowed one hit. The Mustangs answered with two runs in the third on three hits and one error.
After being held scoreless in the second and third, the Rambelles scored fifth in the fourth. Barnhill sent a ball over the right field fence for a three-run home run. The Lubbock native made it 15-2 with her fifth home run of the season. Heather Reatherford drew a walk and Katlyn Herzog trotted home with a two-run home run to centerfield and increase the lead to 17-2.
Morgan Hill entered the circle in the fourth and sat down WNMU in order. ASU added five more runs in the fifth. Johnson doubled to lead off the inning and scored when Megan Gordon hit an infield single. Gordon crossed the plate as Hill hit a double to left field. Reatherford singled to plate to make it 21-2 before Herzog singled to score the final run of the game.
Hill ended the game on a strikeout and only gave up one hit on 2.0 innings of work. Urbany earned her sixth win of the season in 3.0 innings of work. She struck out two and only allowed four hits and two runs.
The Rambelles will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. CST.
