SILVER CITY, New Mexico – The No. 21 Angelo State softball team completed a four-game sweep of Western New Mexico 7-3 in a non-conference game on Sunday in Silver City.
The Rambelles (17-1, 6-0 LSC) recorded nine hits in the win while the Mustangs (0-18) were held to four. Brook Mangold was a perfect 3-for-3 and scored three runs while Courtney Barnhill went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
"We had to scrap again today," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Brandy (Marlett) was cruising along until the fifth when Western New Mexico hit the three run home run and battled back. Courtney Barnhill had a huge hit in the seventh to break the game open. Brook Mangold was huge today with three hits. We did what we needed to do to get four wins."
Taegan Kirk started the scoring for ASU with a solo home run to right center in the top of the second inning. It is the sophomore's third of the season.
Three more runs were added in the third. Madison Greenwell hit an infield single to place Danae Bina and Kelley Johnson laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Brooke Mangold. Courtney Barnhill followed it up with a RBI double to right field.
Brandy Marlett was in control through the first four innings. She only allowed one hit and struck out seven.
Mangold scored in the fifth to make the score 5-0 on a wild pitch after reaching on a single.
WNMU made it interesting in the fifth with a three-run home run to left field cut ASU's lead to 5-3.
Up 5-3 going into the seventh inning, the Rambelles added insurance runs. The bases were loaded for Barnhill and the freshman answered the call with a single to centerfield to plate Mangold and Greenwell to go up 7-3.
"We have a huge series coming up on Thursday with Lubbock Christian and looking forward to getting back to play at home," Scott said.
Marlett finished the win off in the bottom of the seventh with back-to-back fly balls. It is the junior's seventh win of the season. She finished with nine strike outs and only allowed four hits.
The Rambelles will return to Mayer Field on Thursday, March 2 for a doubleheader against Lubbock Christian with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
