PORTALES, New Mexico – The No. 8 Angelo State softball team won its school record tying 20th consecutive game with a 5-0 win in the series finale with ENMU to complete the sweep.
The Rambelles are 24-1 overall and improve to 9-0 in the Lone Star Conference. ASU tied the school record of 20-straight wins that has been accomplished twice in 2003 and 2004. The Greyhounds (13-19, 6-6 LSC) were limited to just two hits in the series finale. It is ASU's ninth shutout of the season.
"Brandy Marlett was really sharp again today," Ange The wind was blowing in all day and it made it tough to score. Taeagn had the big hit to get us on the board. Courtney and Madison were able to stay hot today and we did what we needed to do to win. When they can't score, they can't win and Brandy and the defense were sharp today."
Brandy Marlett was one again had a stellar outing and started the game by sitting down 13 straight Greyhounds.
The Rambelles had a scoring opportunity in the first but stranded a runner at third. It wasn't until the fourth inning that ASU broke through. Kenedy Urbany drew a leadoff walk and pinch runner Kelly Johnson was sacrificed to second. Teagan Kirk sent a ball down the left field line for a RBI double and a 1-0 lead after four innings.
Two more runs came across in the fifth. Bailey Wallace hit an infield single to score pinch runner Megan Gordon and Urbany followed it up with a sacrifice fly to plate Madison Greenwell for a 3-0 advantage. Greenwell went 3-for-4 for the game.
ENMU broke up the no-hitter in the fifth but Marlett continued to sit down the Greyhounds in the fifth. The Greyhounds had a scoring opportunity in the sixth with a runner on third with two outs. Marlett answered with a strikeout to end the threat.
ASU added a pair of insurance runs in the seventh. Courtney Barnhill sent a ball to right center for a double that scored Wallace and Kirk would score on an ENMU error to make it 5-0.
ENMU had runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh but Marlett struck out two of the final three batters to secure the shutout. The junior improves to 11-1 on the season. She struck out nine batters and only gave up two hits with one walk. She now has three shutouts on the season.
The Rambelles will stay on the road and face No. 20 Lubbock Christian in Lubbock for a doubleheader on Monday.
