AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 1 Angelo State softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader from St. Edward's 5-1 and 4-1 on Wednesday in Austin.
The Rambelles improve to 32-2 on the year by scoring nine runs on 15 hits while holding the Hilltoppers (9-18) to two runs on 10 hits. Danae Bina and Taegan Kirk led the way with three RBI apiece while Kenedy Urbany had four hits.
"It was two good road wins coming off an emotional weekend," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "I was a little concerned with our mentality but we came out and did what we have done all year. We pitched and played good defense and a couple of big hits from Danae Bina. We need to have a huge weekend against TWU who is hot and playing well."
An early start was crucial in both games for the Rambelles. Danae Bina hit a two-out single up the middle to score Bailey Wallace and Courtney Barnhill for a 2-0 advantage after the top of the first inning in the opening game. St. Edward's put a runner on third in the home half of the inning but Brandy Marlett retired three in a row keep the score 2-0 after one inning.
Marlett would settle into a groove and only allow one hit through five innings of work.
ASU added a pair of runs in the fifth. Kirk reached on a fielder's choice to score Urbany from third and Bina laid down a squeeze bunt to put the Rambelles up 4-0.
Morgan Hill would come in relief in the sixth and gave up only one run on three hits in the sixth. Alexis Evans countered with a RBI single through the right side in the top of the seventh.
Hill would close out the game for her third save of the season. Marlett earned her 15 win of the season and only gave up one hit.
The Rambelles once again had an early lead. Urbany doubled down the right field line to plate Madison Greenwell from second for a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Kirk made it 3-0 with her sixth home run of the season. The sophomore took a pitch to left field for a two-run shot.
St. Edward's would get its only run in the bottom of the third to cut into ASU's lead at 3-1.
ASU added an insurance run in the top of the sixth. Greenwell's infield RBI single to score Bina from third made it 4-1.
Urbany made the score stick for her 12th win of the season. The senior threw a complete game five-hitter and only allowed one run. She struck out two batters and forced 13 ground outs.
