LAREDO, Texas – The No. 2 Angelo State softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from Texas A&M International 2-1 and 8-0 in Laredo on Wednesday afternoon.
The Rambelles improved to 38-4 scoring a combined 10 runs on 15 hits while limiting the Dustdevils (13-21) to 1 run on six hits.
ASU got on the board first in game one in the second inning. Madison Greenwell reached on a bunt single and moved to third on back-to-back wild pitches. Danae Bina put down a RBI sacrifice bunt to score Greenwell and make it 1-0.
Kenedy Urbany was in control in the circle only giving up two hits through the first four innings.
Heather Reatherford, who pinch ran for Urbany, scored on an error by the second baseman to make it 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth.
Angelo State was up 2-1 in the fifth, Texas A&M-International had bases loaded and only one out. Urbany had been in control the first four innings only allowing two hits but allowed four runners to reach on three hits and a passed ball strike out. Morgan Hill entered the game in relief and quickly ended the threat by striking out back-to-back Dustdevils.Â
Hill continued sitting down Texas A&M International striking out seven of the eight batters she faced. The junior secured her fourth save of the season and the 2-1 victory. The seven strikeouts are a season high for Hill. Urbany picked up her 14th win of the season.
"I didn't like the way we came off the bus today," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We didn't have a lot of energy early and it was the first time all year that has happened. It was disappointing but Kenedy Urbany threw the ball well. Morgan Hill came in relief and was fantastic striking out seven of the eight batters she faced. She was really good and that was great to see. We didn't hit the ball but did what we needed to do to get the win."
Brandy Marlett came out in game two and shutdown the Dustdevils. The junior struck out 10 batters and only gave up one hit in a complete game shutout. She improves to 19-3 on the season and it is her eighth game with at least 10 strikeouts.
The Rambelles put together back-to-back three run innings in the second and third. Taegan Kirk led the inning off with a double to left field and Amanda Ramage hit a single to centerfield. An error on the TAMIU third baseman scored the first run of the game. Brooke Mangold sent a ball past the first baseman down the right field line to score Ramage and Wilhelm.
Three more runs came across in the third. A two RBI double by Ramage made it 5-0 and Bina hit a RBI double to centerfield to make it 6-0. Ramage and Bina combined to go 5-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored in game two.
Greenwell got an RBI fielder's choice to plate Bina in the sixth. Kelly Johnson, pinch running for Urbany in the seventh, scored on a RBI grounder from Kirk.
"Brandy was sharp in game two," Scott said. "She was throwing with velocity and making it move. Brooke Mangold hit a ball down the line to get us going in the second. Danae Bina broke out and had a big game going 3-for-3 and Amanda Ramage had some hits right on the nose. Taegan Kirk was able to crush the ball for two doubles. We were able to get everybody an at-bat which is always good during a midweek game."
The Rambelles return home to host Midwestern State for a three-game LSC series starting on Friday, April 7 at 7 p.m. at Mayer Field.
