No. 2 Rambelles Sweep Midwestern State

SAN ANGELO – The No. 2 Angelo State softball team became the first team in Division II to reach the 40-win mark after completing a sweep 6-2 and 3-1 of Midwestern State on Saturday at Mayer Field.

The Rambelles (41-4, 18-3 LSC) held the Mustangs (17-22, 8-16 LSC) to just three runs in 19 innings. ASU had 15 hits during the doubleheader while holding MSU to just eight.

ASU trailed for the only time of the series in game one as the Mustangs took a 2-0 lead after the top of the second inning. The lead was short lived as the Rambelles answered in the bottom of the inning.

The bases were loaded for Madison Greenwell and the junior sent a shot to the wall in left center. Amanda Ramage, Danae Bina and Alexis Evans all came in to score as Greenwell used her speed to get to third for her fifth triple of the year and a 3-2 lead. Bailey Wallace allowed Greenwell to score by laying down a bunt for the 4-2 advantage.

Kenedy Urbany pitched 4.0 innings and after the second inning, would only allow one hit and two walks. Morgan Hill came in the game at the beginning of the fourth inning and only allowed one hit while striking out four.

ASU added two insurance runs in the fourth inning. Courtney Barnhill recorded a two-RBI single to make the find 6-2. Urbany moved to 15-1 on the year while Hill earned her fifth save of the year. She is now one save away from tying Chelsea Nelson's single season record of six set in 2010.

Game two was much like the first game of the series. ASU scored early and Brandy Marlett used the lead to her advantage.

Taegan Kirk drove in Greenwell in the first inning on a RBI single to right center to make it 1-0 after one inning.

Evans scored the second run on the game as Greenwell added a RBI double to right center for a 2-0 advantage.

After a double down the left field line by Kirk, Bina laid down a bunt to put ASU up 3-0.

It would be all Marlett would need as she once again had the Mustangs number. The junior would hold MSU to just three hits in 7.0 innings of work. She struck out nine and gave up one run for her 21st win of the season. She is now 12 strikeouts away from tying Claudia Lopez' single season record set in 2004.

The Rambelles will hit the road for a three game LSC series with UT Permian Basin starting on Thursday, April 13 at 5 p.m. and concluding with a doubleheader on Friday, April 14 starting at 3 p.m.
