SAN ANGELO – For the second game in a row the No. 1 Angelo State softball team trailed and needed a big hit. Kenedy Urbany once again delivered a home run, this time a three-run blast for a 3-2 win over No. 11 Colorado Mesa.
The senior stepped to the plate with runners at second and third and down 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning. ASU had been held hitless through the first 5.1 innings until Madison Greenwell hit a single up the middle.
Urbany connected on a 1-1 pitch and sent it to the opposite field. A Colorado Mesa outfielder reached for it and ran into the fence as the ball cleared the fence for a three-run home run to put the Rambelles up 3-2 going into the seventh. Urbany's 13th home run of the season moved her to No. 1 on the ASU career home run list with 43 in her career surpassing Kacie Easley.
A combination of Urbany and Brandy Marlett in the circle secured the win in the seventh. Urbany got the first out of the seventh inning before Marlett returned to close out the game.
The junior had thrown the first 5.2 innings of the game allowing just two runs on three hits. Marlett got a strike out for the second out and Taegan Kirk threw out a CMU runner trying to steal on a 1-2 pitch to end the game. Urbany won her 20th game of the season while Marlett earned her second save of the season.
CMU's McKenzie Surface was credited with the loss after giving up three runs on three hits. She struck out eight.
Colorado Mesa (47-7) scored a run in the second and a run in the sixth before ASU took the lead. The Rambelles win was their 54th game of the season and sets a new program record for wins in a season.
Angelo State will face No. 11 Colorado Mesa at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Mayer Field. The Rambelles will need one win to advance to the NCAA Division II Super Regional. The game will be carried locally on KCLL 101.1 with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
