CANYON -Â The Angelo State soccer team defeated Texas Woman's 1-0 Friday night in Canyon, Texas, earning a spot in Sunday's Lone Star Conference final against the winner of the game between West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico.
The Belles (11-6-2) earned their first win over the Pioneers this season after a pair of losses during the regular season.
"Tonight's game was really tough," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "We did a good job of having our wide defenders stepping up and our wide midfielders in on the attack more. Mackenzie and Chloe both were great in helping us keep the ball in the attack. Obviously, we were excited to see Trenadey get the goal. Getting the shutout was good, and now we'll get ready for Sunday."
Neither team was able to get a goal in the opening half, although Angelo State had several chances in the early going. Just five minutes into the match, Avery McNeme got the attack going with the first shot on goal of the match, but had it saved by the Pioneer keeper.
McNeme had another shot saved later in the half, but Chloe Souza and Maddi Kyle also had shots on goal that were kept out of the goal by the Pioneers.
TWU had just one scoring chance in the entire first half, getting only one shot in that goalkeeper Kira Miller saved. Miller finished the game with five saves, giving her 104 on the season, which ties the ASU single-season record. With one more save in Sunday's match, Miller will break that record, which was set by Becky Martin in 2005.
Shortly after the start of the second half, ASU to the lead for good. The Pioneers had the two early scoring chances, with Miller making a save, but then the Belles went on the attack.
The scoring opportunity once again started with McNeme, who put another shot on goal that was saved. Mackenzie Broderick pounced on the rebound and shot on goal again, but had it saved as well. Finally, Trenadey Scott got her foot on the ball and buried it in the back of the net.
The goal was Scott's 15th of the season, which leads the LSC and matches her season total from a year ago.
Following the goal, ASU went into defensive mode after the goal, holding onto their lead for the final 40 minutes. TWU had a better offensive half in the second half, getting off eight shots, including four on goal, but Miller made the save every time.
Angelo State held on, earning their fifth shutout of the season in the win.
The Belles will now face the winner of the late game tonight between the No. 1 seed West Texas A&M and the No. 6 seed Eastern New Mexico.
