CANYON – The Angelo State soccer team won its first-ever Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship Sunday afternoon, defeating Eastern New Mexico 2-0.
The win moved the Belles to 12-6-2 on the season and clinched an automatic bid in the NCAA Postseason Tournament. ASU will find out its seed and where they will play during the NCAA selection show at 5:30 p.m. Monday night.
"This was the only way we were probably going to get in, so we had that in the back of our mind for the last couple of weeks," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "The team is playing at a high level right now, and we're excited to have another game."
Five Belles were named to the All-Tournament team, including Cassandra Moosburger, Avery McNeme, Marissa Berry, Analise Watson and tournament MVP Trenadey Scott.
Scott opened the scoring in the game after the two teams went scoreless through the first 40 minutes.
The Belles had several early scoring chances, including shots on goal by McNeme and Megan Allen that the ENMU keeper made saves on in the first 15 minutes.
Eastern then had its first scoring opportunity of the game 17 minutes in, but it was saved by goalkeeper Kira Milller. The save gave the Frisco native 105 for the season, setting a new ASU single-season record. She made four more saves in the match, helping to preserve the Belles' third straight and sixth overall shutout this season.
The shot was the only one the Belle back line gave up in the first half, and ASU finally broke the scoreless tie in the 44th minute.
Scott scored the goal after a one-touch pass from freshman Chloe Souza, who got her second assist of the season. Scott's goal was her 16th of the season and the 35th of her Angelo State career, moving her into second place on the all-time list.
The Greyhounds had an early chance in the second half, but Miller again made the save. The Belle back line of Marissa Brezgiel, Kylie Hampton, Megan Allen, Marissa Berry, Amber Norris, Kelsey Henning and Meagan Denn allowed more shots in the second half than in the first, but still kept ENMU off the board.
In the 66th minute, ASU doubled the lead as Scott capitalized on a mistake by the Eastern defense and beat the goalkeeper for her second goal of the game and conference-leading 17th of the year.
ASU had a couple more chances on shots by McNeme and Souza in the final 25 minutes, as the Angelo State defense held strong to give the Belles the win.
