No. 2 Rambelles Open Conference Play with 7-3 Victory

KINGSVILLE, Texas – The No. 2 Angelo State softball team opened Lone Star Conference action with a 7-3 win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday evening.

The Rambelles won their 10th straight by recording 12 hits and only allowing one Javelina (3-5, 0-1 LSC) hit through the first six innings of play.

"Obviously it is a great way to start Lone Star Conference play," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "I was thrilled we were able to score four runs in the first with two outs and nobody on base to get a lead. Morgan Hill was phenomenal and threw the ball really well tonight. Mykayla Stroud was able to get some big hits at third today.  It was exactly the way we needed to start but we have to show up tomorrow ready to get after it again."

ASU jumped on the board in the first all with two outs. A single by Courtney Barnhill and a walk by Karina Rocha put runners on for Taegan Kirk. The junior put a single through the right side to score Barnhill from second. Danae Bina was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Mykayla Stroud. The freshman sent a single to left field to score two. Mylonee Becerra, another freshman, took a 1-1 ball to left center in the very next at-bat to push the lead to 4-0 after one inning.

It would be the only runs starter Morgan Hill would need. The senior allowed a bunt single to the leadoff batter and wouldn't give up another hit the rest of the way. Hill sat down 16 straight TAMUK batters at one point and struck out a career high nine in 6.0 innings of work to improve to 7-1.

The Rambelles added insurance runs in the fourth with a Karina Rocha double that scored two.

Stroud capped off the scoring in the top of the seventh with her third RBI of the game which was a solo home run to left field. It is the freshman's second home run of the season.

The Javelinas added three runs in the bottom of the seventh as Meagan Hill came in relief. The redshirt freshman struck out one and got a grounder to end the game.

The series will conclude tomorrow with a  doubleheader scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
