DENTON, Texas – The No. 5 Angelo State team set a school record by hitting three grand slams in defeating Texas Woman's 13-7 on Friday evening in Denton.
The Rambelles (27-3, 12-1 LSC) was able to record 12 hits and score 13 runs with the aid of three home runs. It is the most grand slams in a single game in ASU history. The Pioneers (20-11, 8-5 LSC) gave up nine walks and put 13 hits together in the loss.
"We had some huge hits today," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Big grand slams in the first and second and continued to score by hitting another in the seventh. Morgan Hill pitched well and it was nice to get Makayla Corbin some meaningful innings. It was a good start to the weekend."
Angelo State started the home runs early in the top of the first inning. Two walks and a single loaded the bases for Taegan Kirk. The junior crushed 2-2 pitch over the left center fence for a grand slam. It is her sixth home run of the season and put ASU up 4-0.
The Pioneers got one back in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run. It would be the only hit that starter Morgan Hill would give up through the first three innings of the game.
The second inning was similar to the second inning. A single and two walks had the bases loaded but the difference is there were two outs. Jade Strother sent a ball over the left field fence for her first home run of the season to increase the lead to 8-1.
ASU added another run in the fourth on a RBI single from Danae Bina.
Up 9-1 TWU would score four runs in the fourth and fifth to cut the lead to 9-5.
The Rambelles added four more runs in the top of the seventh. For the third time in the game, ASU had the bases loaded for the third time and Amanda Ramage made it pay off. The senior crushed a ball over the left field fence for her second home run of the season and first grand slam of the season to make the score 13-5.
Maykayla Corbin, who relieved Hill in the fifth, would close out the game in the seventh for her first save of her career. The freshman threw three innings and struck out two. Hill improved to 14-2 after throwing 4.0 innings pitched. She struck out four and only allowed four hits.
The Rambelles will conclude its three-game series with Texas Woman's starting with a doubleheader tomorrow at 1 p.m.
