SAN ANGELO – The No. 4 Angelo State softball team run-ruled Central Oklahoma 12-2 and 12-4 for a doubleheader sweep on Thursday at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (20-1), who moved up to No. 4 in the most recent NFCA poll, won their 19th and 20th straight game of the season with the pair of victories. It is tied for the second longest streak in program history. ASU has won 81 of their last 89 games and is 48-2 at Mayer Field the last two seasons. Angelo State scored 24 runs on 21 hits and held the Bronchos (13-7) to six runs on 12 hits.
"I was very impressed with the way we swung the bats today," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "To come out against a good UCO team and to be able to score 24 runs in 10 innings is really impressive. I was really proud of the way they played today."
The first game was quiet in the first inning but it was a big offensive explosion in the second for ASU. The Rambelles started the inning by drawing four walks in the first five at-bats to make the score 2-0 and load the bases. Madison Greenwell hit a RBI single to left field and Bailey Wallace recorded a RBI sacrifice fly. Karina Rocha quickly cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left center. It is the sophomore's 12th homer of the season. Taegan Kirk followed it up with a solo home run to centerfield to make it 8-0.
Angelo State continued to add runs in the third. Brooke Mangold singled to right field to drive in two runs and Greenwell singled to the right field to plate Mangold to increase the lead to 11-0.
It would be all the runs Morgan Hill would need. She held UCO hitless through the first three innings of play. The Bronchos would score two in the top of the fourth off two hits but it would be the only two hits the senior would allow.
Amanda Ramage capped of the scoring with a solo home run to left center. It is the senior's first of the year.Â
Meagan Hill came in to pitch the fifth and finished the game off with two pop ups and a grounder. Morgan Hill improved to 11-1 by only giving up two hits and striking out two.
Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two. The Bronchos were able to score three runs on four hits.
Angelo State quickly responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning. Rocha singled through the left side to score Greenwell and a RBI sacrifice fly by Kirk cut the deficit to 3-2.
Brandy Marlett, who got the start in game two, was able to work out a jam in the second. UCO had runners on second and third with one but Marlett struck out back-to-back batters to end the inning.
ASU would gain the lead in the bottom of the second. Mangold had another RBI single to right field to tie the game and a bases loaded walk from Rocha gave the Rambelles a 4-3. The senior went 2-for-4 on the day with four RBIs and scoring three runs. Mykayla Stroud was a hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 5-3 after two innings.
Marlett once again had to work around trouble in the third. The Bronchos loaded the bases with two outs but the senior was able to get a pop-up to Wallace at second for the final out of the inning.
The Angelo State offense was able to pad the lead in the third with another bases loaded hit-by-pitch. Wallace was hit for the second consecutive at-bat to push the advantage to 6-3.
The Bronchos go the run back in the top of the fourth with a RBI double. Morgan Hill game in with two outs and the tying run at the plate in the fourth. The senior struck out the batter to end the threat.
The Rambelles put the game away in the fourth. Taylor Fogle started the scoring with a RBI single past the outstretched arms of the UCO shortstop and third baseman. Danae Bina and Heather Reatherford pulled off a double steal. Bina took off for second and the Central Oklahoma tried to throw her out at second. As the throw went, Reatherford broke for home and beat the tag. Greenwell recorded an RBI fielder's choice and Rocha followed it up with a RBI single to give ASU an 11-2 lead.
Morgan Hill sat the UCO side down in order and in the bottom half Jade Strother ended the game. The sophomore hit a ball down the right field line that bounced away from the Central Oklahoma fielder to score Fogle from first for the 12-2 final. Marlett earned her ninth victory of the season while striking out four and Hill picked up her first save of the season by not allowing a hit in 1.1 innings of work.Â
Angelo State returns to Mayer Field on Friday for a three-game LSC series against ENMU. Friday will feature a doubleheader at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. followed by the series finale on Saturday at 1 p.m. Â
