SAN ANGELO – Angelo State's Brandy Marlett threw her fifth career no-hitter, as the Rambelles recorded consecutive no-hitters for the second time in program history in a sweep of UTPB on Saturday at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (36-6, 20-4) last tossed consecutive no-hitters on the same day in 2002. Morgan Hill capped off Friday's series opener with her first no-hitter and Marlett started the doubleheader with her second of the season. The no-hitters are the 12th and 13th in program history. The Falcons (16-30, 4-20 LSC) only scored one run the entire three-game series on five hits.
"I was really impressed with our pitchers this weekend," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Brandy Marlett was really sharp and to be able to get her fifth no-hitter is special. We were able to get Megan Hill and Makayla Corbin some time and both looked sharp today. It was a great weekend."
Marlett went to work striking out five of the first seven batters she faced.
ASU was able to score quite a few runs in the first with a unique play by Madison Greenwell. Three of the first four batters drew walks to score the first run of the game while Bailey Wallace collected the first hit of the game with a double to center. A single up the middle by Taylor Fogle scored two more. It was 4-0 after a bases loaded walk by Jade Strother to bring Greenwell to the plate for the second time in the inning.
The senior crushed a pitch past a diving center fielder that rolled to the fence. Greenwell raced around the bases and was able to score for an inside the park grand slam. It is the first grand slam of her career and third home run of the season.
The runs didn't stop in the inning as Karina Rocha sent a ball to left center for a two-RBI double to make it 11-0 after the first inning.
Another ASU ran came across in the bottom of the second as Greenwell added her fifth RBI of the game with a double to left field to increase the lead to 12-0.
Marlett would only face two over the minimum while striking out a season high 12 batters. Five of the last six batters she faced went down via the strikeout. The senior is now 17-2 on the season. Her first no-hitter of the season came against Western New Mexico.
The Rambelles tacked on its final two runs of the game with a double down the left field line by Amanda Ramage that scored two runs to make the final 14-0.
In game two, ASU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead with some fireworks in the bottom of the first inning. With a runner at first, Courtney Barnhill launched a ball over the left center fence to make it 2-0. Taegan Kirk quickly make it 3-0 by crushing a ball over the left field fence. It is the second time this season the duo has hit back-to-back home runs.
Megan Hill received her second start of the season and held UTPB scoreless over four innings and only allowed four hits. The Falcons would go scoreless for 16 straight innings and hitless in 14.
The Rambelles added to their lead with two runs in the fourth. Brook Mangold got a RBI fielder's choice and Greenwell hit a grounder to score Bina to make it 5-0.
The only UTPB run came in the top of the fifth but it would be the only run Maykayla Corbin would allow. The freshman came in to pitch the final three innings of the game and only allowed three hits. Hill would get her second win of the season while Corbin picked up her second save.
Strother added the final run of the weekend with a RBI single to make the final 6-1.
The Rambelles have a quick turnaround with a doubleheader against Texas A&M International on Monday starting at 12 p.m.
