SAN ANGELO – The No. 6 Angelo State softball team dropped its series opener with Cameron by a 2-1 score on Friday night at Mayer Field.
The Rambelles (43-6, 23-4 LSC) were plagued by errors and left six runners on base. The Aggies (29-15, 16-11 LSC) were limited to just three hits but scored two unearned runs.
Cameron scored the first run in the top of the second inning. After a single and a grounder, the Aggies tried to steal third and a throwing error allowed the run to score.
Taegan Kirk got the run back in a big way. The junior crushed a ball over the left field fence for her 12th home run of the season.
The Aggies scored a run in the third on a throwing error to make it 2-1.
Brandy Marlett would only allow one other base runner the rest of the game sitting down 11 of the next 12 batters.
The Rambelles had chances to score in the fourth and sixth. Runners on first and second in the fourth with only one out in the fourth would turn up empty as ASU hit a grounder and fly ball to end the inning. In the sixth, Megan Gordon and Mykayla Stroud, both pinch runners, were at second and third with two outs but were unable to score.
Cameron was able to hang on the for the 2-1 getting a double play and throwing out a runner trying to steal for the final out of the game.
Brandy Marlett suffers just her third loss of the season throwing 7.0 innings and striking out eight.
The Rambelles will look to win one of two games of the doubleheader to clinch the LSC Championship. The team's six seniors will be recognized prior to the 1 p.m. game.
