No. 10 Rambelles Take Two from Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The No. 10 Angelo State softball team swept its LSC series opening doubleheader with Midwestern State 8-3 and 7-3 in Wichita Falls on Friday afternoon.

The Rambelles (32-6, 16-4 LSC) recorded 18 hits and scored 15 runs. ASU scored first in both games and are now 29-3 when scoring first. Angelo State also were a perfect 12-for-12 stealing bases and drew 11 walks.  The Mustangs fall to 13-18 overall and 7-16 in the LSC.

"It wasn't always pretty at time but we did what we needed to do to get two wins," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "Brandy Marlett and Morgan Hill both threw the ball well. We played in some tough conditions from the fifth inning on when the cold front came through. I was proud of how we were able to handle it. We were able to get some big hits and got to steal a bunch of bases."

Taegan Kirk started the first game off in a big way. The junior crushed a ball over the left center fence for a two-run home run.

Brook Mangold scored in the top of the second on a RBI single from Madison Greenwell. Midwestern State cut into the lead with a solo home run in the second to make it 3-1.

It was a one run game in the fourth as the Mustangs scored an unearned run in the fourth.

The Rambelles added two runs in the fifth. Taylor Fogle drove in two runs with a double to left center to increase the lead 5-2.

It was 6-2 after a Courtney Barnhill RBI single in the top of the sixth. MSU scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Jade Strother and Mykayla Stroud scored ASU's final runs of the game as Danae Bina sent a ball down the left field line to make it 8-3.

Brandy Marlett would get her 16th win of the season by only allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. The senior struck out nine and gave up one walk. Megan Hill would close the game out in the seventh only giving up a single hit.

Morgan Hill game out in game two and was sharp. The senior would limit the Mustangs to two hits through the first four innings of the game.

ASU would get on the board in the second with a two-RBI single up the middle from Greenwell.

Barnhill and Kirk trotted around the bases to start the inning as they hit back-to-back solo home runs to make the score 4-0 in the third. Barnhill now has seven home runs on the season and Kirk has eight. Bina made the score 5-0 with a RBI single up the middle.

Midwestern State made things interesting in the fifth with a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 5-2. It was a two-run game after a RBI double in the sixth by the Mustangs.

Greenwell added two insurance runs with double to right center to bring home Stroud and Mangold.

Morgan Hill struck out 10 Mustangs in her 15th win of the season. She only gave up three runs on six hits.

Greenwell finished the day going 5-for-9 with five RBIs and scoring twice. Five different players had at least two RBIs with Bina and Kirk with three and Barnhill and Fogle recorded two each.

The Rambelles and Mustangs have moved tomorrow's game back to 3 p.m. to avoid inclement weather.
