No. 6 Rambelles Use Seven Run Second to Beat Colorado Christian

SAN ANGELO – The No. 6 Angelo State softball team used a seven run second inning to take down Colorado Christian at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional held at Mayer Field to setup a matchup with No. 10 West Texas A&M at 2 p.m. on Friday.

The Rambelles (48-7) scored eight runs on six hits in the game. Colorado Christian (43-14) were held to three hits with two coming in the first inning. ASU advances to face West Texas A&M. The two teams are 5-5 against each other in the last 10 matchups and it will be the first meeting at a regional since 2015 in Canyon.

"It was a great way to start the regional tournament," Angelo State head softball coach Travis Scott said. "We had the big seven run second inning and we showed some discipline at the plate. Of course the big hit came off Karina's bat with her grand slam to give us the big cushion. Colorado Christian came out and got the early run but Morgan (Hill) was able to come in and be efficient in relief."

The Cougars grabbed the first lead by scoring one run on two hits in the top of the first inning.

ASU threatened with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to score.

After allowing two hits in the first, Brandy Marlett would settle in and not allow a hit over the next two innings and striking out three.

The offense responded in the bottom of the second. Madison Greenwell had runners on second and third and hit a ball through the right side for a 2-1 lead with only one out. Bailey Wallace and Taegan Kirk hit singles around a Courtney Barnhill walk to load the bases. Karina Rocha cleared the bases hitting a high deep ball over the right field wall to make the score 7-1.

Amanada Ramage would add another run with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth to increase the lead to 8-1.

Morgan Hill would come in relief in the fourth and shutdown the Cougars. The senior would only allow one run and one hit over four innings while striking out two to end the game at 8-2.

First pitch will be at 2 p.m. tomorrow with the game broadcasted on KOOL 100.1 with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
