STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The No. 23 Angelo State University football team dropped its first contest in a well fought battle against No. 4 Tarleton State University on Saturday night, 30-13.
The Rams fall to 4-1 on the season and 2-1 in Lone Star Conference action.
In Case You Missed It:
- The Rams got off to a slow start in the first, as Tarleton rushed 48 yards to take a quick 7-0 lead.
- Lawson Ayo grabbed a 22-yard pass to give ASU a first down halfway through the second quarter but the Rams were unable to capitalize.
- Despite another score by the Texans, the Rams blocked the punt to trail 13-0 with 6:33 remaining in the second quarter.
- Connor Flanigan put the Rams on the board late in the second to end the shut out with 2:22 remaining, nailing a 41-yard field goal attempt.
- In the final 46 seconds of the first half, Flanigan split the uprights at 42-yards out for the Rams to trail, 13-6.
- The Rams held the Texans to their lowest score through the first half so far this season with just 13 points.
- Late in the third quarter, the Texans converted on a fourth down to increase the lead to 23-6.
- Halfway through the fourth quarter and Payne Sullins finally found the end zone for ASU, as he rushed 20-yards with 8:15 remaining to give the Rams their first touchdown of the night and trail 23-13.
- Khalil Banks rushes four yards to insure the Tarleton State lead.
- The Rams tried to make a run, as Alize Thomas started off the drive with a 27-yard kickoff return followed by a 42-yard rush down the field to the red zone by Lloyd Howard.
- Sullins aired it out to Ayo for 18 yards to put the Rams within the 10-yard line but were unable to captalize, as they fell 30-13.
Key Players:
- Howard led the offense on the ground with 133 yards on 21 carries with his longest at 42 yards. He finished with 160 all-purpose yards.
- Lawson Ayo notched 58 yards on five receptions with his longest being 22-yards. Ayo had 101 all-purpose yards with 43 yards off punt returns.
- Flanigan kicked his first field goals of the season both from over 40-yards out and converted on both.
- Sullins threw for 168 yards on 18 completions.
