Belles Season Ends in Heartbreaker to LCU

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Angelo State University women's soccer team season ended in a heartbreaking penalty kick loss against Lubbock Christian University on Tuesday afternoon. The Belles fell 5-4 in penalty kicks.

In Case You Missed It:
  • Both teams battled hard in a very cold and windy contest as neither team was able to score in regulation or double overtime.
  • Both teams held heavy possession throughout the game not allowing many chances to score.
  • The Chaps outshot the Belles, 18-8, in regulation.
  • Both teams tallied two shots on goal during the duration of the game.
  • Kira Miller recorded two saves in the net.
  • In the penalty kick situation, Trenadey Scott shot first for the Belles, hitting the right post to score and tie the penalty kicks up 1-1.
  • The Chaps went ahead 2-1 in PKs to try and edge the Belles out of the playoffs.
  • After a missed shot by the Blue and Gold, the Chaps increased the PK lead to 3-1 and Valerie Solis cut in on that lead to 3-2.
  • LCU made its next attempt and Ally Warren followed suit for ASU to trail 4-3.
  • Miller grabbed one save to allow Kiah Benham to tie the shootout, 4-4, and force a sixth round.
  • Arely Jimenez made the next attempt for the Chaps to take the 5-4 penalty kick victory. ASU missed on its final attempt.
Coach McCorkle's Thoughts:
"Tough loss. Game has to end and PK's can be a brutal ending to a game and a season. It isn't fair, but it is what it is. I am proud of today, overall. Defense gets a shutout and some players that have been a little up and down in the season showed up and were solid today. A few injuries didn't help us today but that's why we have subs. In a totally new conference alignment and teams, we showed well for ASU and at the end of the day, that's who we play for - ASU. We learned a lot this year and hope for an even better season next year."

Key Players:
  • Scott led the offense with three shots, while five other Belle players tallied one. Cassidy Hill and Warren each notched one shot on goal.
  • Miller finished with two saves and one save in penalty kicks.
  • Scott, Solis, Warren, and Benham all scored goals in the penalty kick period.
