Kirk Goes 4-4 in Game One as #1 Rambelles Play Tough Doubleheader Against West Texas A&M

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Taegan Kirk opened the doubleheader Saturday with a perfect day at the plate and despite the #1 Rambelles outhitting West Texas A&M in the first game, the Angelo State University softball team fell 7-1 and then the Lady Buffs held on to claim the second game 9-6 in Lone Star Conference action at Mayer Field.

Angelo State (14-5, 3-3 LSC) posted a 9-8 edge on hits in the opener and neither team committed an error. West Texas A&M (11-4, 6-0 LSC) came through with the big hits, as they were able to open a tight 2-0 game in the sixth by scoring five runs to grab the victory.

The game was scoreless into the fourth as the Rambelles had a golden opportunity to grab the lead in the second when Avery Zeigler singled with one out and then stole second. Jade Strother walked and then Hatty Shope was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. The Lady Buffs were able to escape the inning without any damage, getting a sharp lineout to shortstop and then a pop out to shortstop to end the inning.

West Texas A&M grabbed the lead with two runs on a hit in the fourth to push in front 2-0. The Rambelles again threatened in the fifth. With one out, Kirk singled up the middle, Taylor Fogle was hit-by-pitch and then Karina Rocha singled to right to load the bases. Again, the Lady Buffs were able to avoid any damage as a groundball back to the pitcher turned into a fielder's choice out at the plate and then a groundout to third ended the inning.

The Lady Buffs opened the game up in the sixth as they scored five runs on four hits to move in front 7-0. Angelo State got on the board in the home half with Ashlyn Lerma walking and after a single by Courtney Barnhill, Kirk drove in the run with a solid single through the left side to close the scoring with the Lady Buffs taking the second game of the series 7-1.

Outside of the 4-4 game at the plate by Kirk, Strother tallied two hits. In the circle, Meagan Hill started and went the first five innings and allowed six earned runs to take the loss (5-2). Victoria Vasquez tossed the final two innings and allowed just one earned run.

Kourtney Coveney, Ruby Salzman and Alyx Cordell all posted two-hit games to lead the Lady Buffs. Cordell and Brittany Cruz drove in two runs apiece. In the circle, Shayne Starkey started and tossed a complete game after going all seven innings to record the victory (4-1).

In the second game of the doubleheader and third and final game of the series, West Texas A&M outhit Angelo State 12-5, but the Rambelles made a push in the sixth and nearly came back to tie.

Early on, the Lady Buffs scored four runs in the second and then two more in the fourth to take the early 6-0 lead. The Rambelles got on the board in the fourth as Rocha singled and after a fielder's choice erased her at second for the second out, Angelo State got a two out rally started. Zeigler reached on the fielder's choice and then stole second. Strother doubled to left-center which brought in Zeigler. After a walk to Mykayla Stroud, Megan Gordon was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Lerma was next up and she was also hit to force in a run leaving the Rambelles down four at 6-2. West Texas A&M avoided any further damage as a strikeout followed to end the inning.

West Texas A&M answered back with three runs on four hits in the fifth to move the advantage out to 9-2.

The Rambelles caught fire in the sixth when Zeigler opened the inning by being hit-by-pitch. Strother walked and then a fielding error on a ball put in play by Gordon allowed Zeigler to score. A walk to Lerma loaded the bases for Barnhill who also walked to pick up the RBI and trim the deficit to five. Kirk added another RBI when she hit a sacrifice fly to right and then a single by Fogle brought in the fourth run of the inning and left the Lady Buffs in front 9-6. With the tying run at the plate, a runner leaving early at first marked the final out to close the sixth.

Angelo State couldn't mount a rally in the seventh, as a fly out, pop out and line out ended the game with West Texas A&M taking the 9-6 victory.

Fogle led the way with two hits, while six players drove in a run and Strother scored a pair of runs. In the circle, Makayla Corbin went the first 3.1 innings and allowed four earned runs to end up with the loss (6-1). Hill tossed the final 3.2 innings and allowed three earned runs.

Salzman paced the Lady Buffs with three hits, while Starkey drove in three runs. In the circle, Kyra Lair tossed her second straight complete game in as many days going all seven innings for the win (7-0) after allowing five earned runs.

Angelo State will return to action this coming Tuesday when they will travel to Edmond, Okla., to face #19 Central Oklahoma for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
