San Angelo, TX – The Angelo State Rambelles move on to 19-9 on the season as they swept the St. Mary's Rattlers in Wednesday's nonconference doubleheader. With the two wins,
Travis Scott's career wins number now sits at 799.
With a 26 mph wind blowing straight in, everyone thought that the team who played better small ball would be the one that came out victorious on the day. What actually happened could not be further from that. There were three home runs hit in the second game, and three hits for extra bases. The Rambelles were the on the better half of the numbers, hitting two of the three homeruns and all three of the extra base hits.
Courtney Barnhill had herself a showcase day in the batter's box, going 3-6 with a double, a triple, a two run bomb, and drove in four of the Rambelles' seven runs on the day.
Taegan Kirk actually led the team in average though, as the Lubbock catcher was 4-6 with a double.
ASU's offense was matched only by their incredible defensive effort, especially in the circle. In game one,
Meagan Hill through seven complete innings and gave up only two hits while striking out eight to help the Rambelles to a 2-0 win.
Makayla Corbin was called to start in the second game, and followed up Hill's solid performance with one of her own. In 6.1 innings of work, Corbin gave up only four hits and two runs while striking out six, holding the Rattlers to a .167 average in the game.
Victoria Vasquez then came in to close the curtain on the doubleheader as she earned her second save of the season by retiring both batters she faced. As a whole, the Rambelle staff held the Rattlers to a .120 average throughout both games.Â
Game one was a pitchers' duel that tested both teams, with Angelo State ultimately coming out on top. Both teams failed to score until the fifth inning, when the Rambelles proved that speed kills.
Megan Gordon would light the fire by legging out an infield single. She would then steal second base to collect her fourth stolen bag of the year. With two outs,
Ashlyn Lerma would then thread a line drive single to left field which would score the speedy Gordon from second. This is when
Courtney Barnhill collected her triple of the day, smashing a pitch on the outside half of the plate to deep right centerfield that brought in Lerma. Two runs would be enough for the home team as
Meagan Hill would go on to collect her complete game shutout and her seventh win of the season.
Game two started off slow, but both team's bats would wake up through the third, fourth, and fifth innings. It was in the third inning that Barnhill put the Rambelles on the board with a logic-defying two run homerun 220 feet the opposite direction in 24 mph winds blowing straight in. Staci Johns then responded with a two run homerun of her own to tie up the game. The Rattlers would be held scoreless for the rest of the game while ASU would tack on three more runs.
Hatty Shope crushed her third homerun of the season,
Courtney Barnhill had an RBI double, and
Avery Zeigler laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Barnhill. With the doubleheader win, ASU looks forward to Friday as they take on the Mustangs of Midwestern State University at 6 p.m.
