SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Rambelles kicked off the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge as they swept their opponents in the first day of the tournament, Texas A&M International and Ouachita Baptist.
The Rambelles are now 9-3 overall.
Against Texas A&M International:
Bottom of the 2
nd Inning:
- Rambelles would enter the bottom of the inning down one run.
- Keilei Garcia would start the offense off for the Rambelles, smacking a single into the outfield.
- With Mykayla Stroud and Jade Strother both walking, the Rambelles would have the bases loaded as Logan Graham would come to the plate. Graham would be walked, scoring Garcia and keeping the bases loaded for ASU.
- Courtney Barnhill would hit a sacrifice fly out into deep center field, advancing Strother to third and scoring Stroud as the Rambelles would take a 2-1 lead over the Dustdevils. Strother later stole home to grab another run for Angelo State, their lead growing to 3-1.
- Paxton Scheurer smacked a ball out of the park for her first home run of the season, scoring her and Graham to put the Rambelles in a 5-1 lead over the Dustdevils to end the second inning.
Top of the Third:
Genesis Armendariz would keep the Dustdevils from getting their offense going as she struck out two players, walked another, and had one Dustdevil ground out to third base.
Bottom of the Third:
- Karina Rocha would reach first on a fielders choice, having Megan Gordon pinch run for her. Gordon would later steal second base. Garcia would be hit by a pitch and advance to first, with Strother behind her. Strother would hit a single, advancing Garcia to second and scoring Gordon from second.
- Graham would step up to the plate and hit a single, advancing Strother to third, scoring Garcia on an error on a bad throw from the shortstop.
- With the bases loaded, Barnhill would crack one into the outfield, scoring Strother and advancing Graham to third base.
Top of the Fifth:
Armendariz would go three up, three down as she struck out another Dustdevil, letting her defense take care of the other batters as both players would ground out to the third baseman.
Bottom of the Fifth:
- Stroud would be hit by a pitch and advance to first base with Strother coming to bat behind her.
- Strother would hit a double, advancing Stroud to third and into scoring position for the Rambelles to take game from a run rule perspective.
- Graham would fly out to center field on a sacrifice fly, scoring yet another RBI as Stroud would run home, ending the game in favor for the Rambelles, 9-1.
Key Players:
- Paxton Scheurer had three at-bats with one run, one hit, and two RBI.
- Jade Strother had two at-bats with two runs, two hits, two RBI, and one walk.
- Logan Graham had one at-bat with one run, one hit, and two RBI.
- Genesis Armendariz pitched for five innings, throwing five strikeouts and allowing only one run and three hits.
Against Ouachita Baptist:
It was a slow start both both teams through the first 2 innings as neither team couldn't get any offense going.
Top of the Third Inning:
Meagan Hill started the third inning off well for the Rambelles, striking out one Tiger and allowing her defense to handle the other two as one would foul out to third base and the other would hit a pop fly to the shortstop.
Bottom of the Third Inning:
- Paxton Scheurer would hit a single, with Ashlyn Lerma pinch running for Scheurer. Lerma would steal second shortly after.
- Madison Fernandez would ground out to second base, advancing Lerma to third and into scoring position for the Rambelles.
- Keilei Garcia would be hit by a pitch at her turn at bat, and would steal second. Avery Zeigler would also reach first base, being walked to load the bases for Angelo State.
- Mykayla Stroud would also walk, scoring Lerma and advancing Zeigler to second, and Garcia to third to keep the bases loaded for ASU.
- TheTigers would walk Strother, giving the Rambelles another run as Garcia would score off of the walk, giving Angelo State a 2-0 lead over Texas A&M International.
Top of the Fourth Inning:
Makayla Corbin was sharp in her relief of
Meagan Hill, not allowing a runner to reach base at the top of the fourth inning, allowing her defense to make some stellar catches. Corbin would throw a runner out at first, another Tiger would fly out to left field, and one would foul out to the first baseman.
Bottom of the Fourth Inning:
- Courtney Barnhill would be walked on a 3-0 count, stealing second shortly afterwards.
- Fernandez would fly out to center field, advancing Barnhill to third base and into scoring position.
- Karina Rocha would hit the second home run for the Rambelles, scoring Barnhill from third and extending the Rambelles lead to 4-0 over the Tigers.
The game would come to and end shortly after, as neither team could get any offense going. Defense played a huge part in the scoreless 5th, 6th and 7th innings.
