Vasquez Shines in Rambelles Sweep of St. Mary's

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Rambelle softball team, led by senior Victoria Vasquez in the circle, swept the St. Mary's Rattlers in ASUs' first home doubleheader of the season.
The Rambelles are 16-6 overall with a 3-3 conference record.

Game One:
Top of the 1st Inning:
  • Victoria Vasquez would step into the circle for the Rambelles, throwing one strikeout and giving her defense the chance to show their field skills, with one Rattler grounding out to third base while the other would fly out to the center fielder to bring Angelo State into the batters box.

Top of the 2nd Inning:
Vasquezs' defense had her back tonight as a Rattler would ground out to the first baseman, setting the second batter up for an impressive double play the very next batter as the Rattler would hit a line drive right to the third baseman who would throw the runner out as she headed back to first base to bring the Rambelles back to bat.

Bottom of the 2nd Inning:
  • Karina Rocha would walk with Keilei Garcia coming to bat behind her. Garcia would hit a single into left field and advance Rocha to second base.
  • Jade Strother would smash a single into center field, advancing on the throw to second base, scoring Rocha in the process for an RBI. The Rambelles would take a 1-0 lead over St. Mary's.
  • Ashlyn Lerma would also walk with Hatty Shope to bat behind her. Shope would reach first on a fielders' choice, advancing Lerma to second and Strother to third, but Garcia would be thrown out at home for the second out of the inning.
  • Paxton Scheurer also hit a single into left field, advancing to second on the throw and Shope would take third base, with Lerma and Strother both scoring a run each to bring the Rambelles to a 3-0 lead over the Rattlers.

Top of the 3rd Inning:
Vasquez threw a strikeout against the first Rattler batter, while the second batter would ground out to the shortstop, and St. Mary's would hit two singles into the outfield and advance a base each to put the Rattlers into scoring position, but a final strikeout to end the top of the 3rd inning from Vasquez kept the Rambelles 3-0 over the Rattlers leading into their next at-bat.

Bottom of the 4th Inning:
  • Garcia would start the bottom of the 4th inning off to a good start as she would smack a homer over the fence, increasing the Rambelles lead to 4-0 over St. Mary's.
  • Strother would hit a double into deep left field, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt from Lerma to put her into scoring position. Shope would walk and steal second shortly afterwards. Strother would be thrown out at home as Scheurer reached first on a fielders choice and Shope would reach third.

Top of the 5th Inning:
Vasquez continued to show her pinching skills as she would throw two more strikeouts while one batter would pop up to the shortstop, bringing ASU back to the box.

Top of the 6th Inning:
Vasquezs' pitching knowledge were put to the test as she would throw three Rattler batters out at the plate swinging, going three up, three down to end the Rattlers offensive drive in the 6th.

Top of the 7th Inning:
With a runner on second off of a double into center field, Vasquez would remain calm and let the Rambelle defense take care of the next two batters with one popping up to third base and the other grounding out to second base. Vasquez would end the game for Angelo State as she would throw three straight strikes to finish the 7th inning.

Key Players:
  • Keilei Garcia had three at-bats with one run, two hits and one RBI.
  • Jade Strother had three at-bats with one run, two hits and one RBI.
  • Paxton Scheurer had four at-bats with one hit and two RBI.
  • Victoria Vasquez would be the MVP for Angelo State in game one against the Rattlers, pitching for seven innings and throwing 11 strikeouts.

Game Two:
Top of the 1st Inning:
  • The Rambelle defense, led by Genesis Armendariz in the circle, would quickly take care of the Rattlers as two batters would ground out to the third baseman and the third would pop up to the second baseman.

Bottom of the 1st Inning:
  • Hatty Shope began game two offensively for Angelo State, singling into right field.
  • Paxton Scheuer would also hit a single into left field however, advancing Shope to second.
  • Courtney Barnhill would hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, advancing Scheurer to second and Shope to third. Sadly, the Rambelles would end the inning with bases loaded as Avery Zeigler would pop up to the catcher and Karina Rocha would strikeout swinging.

Top of the 2nd Inning:
  • St. Mary's would retaliate quickly as they would hit a homer to take an early 1-0 lead over the Rambelles.
  • The Rattlers would hit a double into left field, advancing to third on the next batters ground out to the shortstop, giving St. Mary's a runner in scoring position. Armendariz however would stay cool under pressure, as the runner at third would attempt to steal home, Armendariz would get the out at home plate, saving a run from scoring. The Rattlers would end the inning with a ground out to the shortstop.

Bottom of the 2nd Inning:
Maleya Burns would quickly respond with a home run of her own, hitting her twelfth homerun of the year, tying the game at 1-1.

Top of the 3rd inning:
Armendariz and the Rambelle defense would quickly retake control of the batters' box as three Rattler batters would step into the box and three would step back out as one would pop up to second base, one would foul out to the third baseman, and the third would ground out to second base.

Bottom of the 3rd Inning:
  • Hatty Shope would single to the second baseman, beating the throw, then steal second base shortly afterwards.
  • Barnhill would hit a single towards the pitcher who would fumble with the ball and end up throwing the ball past the first baseman, giving Barnhill a chance to show off her speed as she would make it to third base, putting ASU in a scoring position and scoring Shope to bring ASU a 2-1 lead over the Rattlers.
  • Zeigler would hit a sacrifice bunt towards the pitcher, being thrown out but scoring Barnhill from third in the process, extending the Rambelles lead to 3-1.

Top of the 4th Inning:
  • Armendariz would throw one strikeout with a runner on second base, as the next two batters from St. Mary's would both foul out, one to the third baseman and the other to the catcher.

Bottom of the 4th Inning:
  • Maleya Burns would hit a single into center field with Keilei Garcia coming to bat behind her. Garcia would walk, advancing Burns to second. Jade Strother would hit a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher, advancing Garcia and Burns to second and third.
  • Ashlynn Box would hit for Ashlyn Lerma, smacking a single into left field, scoring both Burns and Garcia to bring ASU to a 5-1 lead over the Rattlers.

Top of the 5th Inning:
Very shortly into the fifth inning, Armendariz would face a St. Mary's batter with a runner on first and second. Armendariz would strike one batter out, with the third baseman tagging the runner at third unassisted. St. Mary's would hit a single to first base, beating the tag out and loading the bases against ASU. Armendariz would then walk the next two Rattler batters, the Rattlers cutting the Rambelles lead down to 5-3, before Victoria Vasquez would come in to relieve Armendariz. Vasquez would strike the final batter out, giving the Rambelles another chance at-bat.

Top of the 6th Inning:
Vasquez would once again show her pitching ability, along with counting on her defense behind her as the Rattler would fly out to both center field and second base, while the final batter would pop up to the pitcher.

Bottom of the 6th Inning:
  • Madison Fernandez, pinch hitting for Rocha, would smack a triple into deep right center field, starting the bottom of the 6th for the Rambelles in a good way.
  • Burns would walk with Garcia on deck for the Rambelles, stealing second shortly afterwards.
  • Strother would reach first on a fielders choice, Burns being thrown out at third, with Strother stealing second shortly afterwards.
  • Lerma would walk with Shope on deck to bat for Angelo State.
  • Fernandez would steal home shortly afterwards, bringing ASU to a 6-3 lead over the Rattlers.

Top of the 7th Inning:
Vasquez would rely on her defense to end the game for Angelo State, as three Rattler batters would fly out to the right fielder, line out to the first baseman, and ground out to the third baseman to end the game in favor of the Rambelles as ASU would defeat St. Mary's at Mayer Field, 6-3.
