Rams Down No. 17 St. Edward's 68-65

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Playing in a non-conference match up after scheduling changes, the Angelo State men's basketball team pulled off a victory over No. 17 St. Edward's, upsetting the Hilltoppers 68-65 at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center on Sunday night.

With the game tied 65-65 and 12 seconds left to play, Kevon Godwin charged down the lane before leaning back and floating the ball over an SEU defender to score the winning shot while being fouled on the play.

The win lifts the Rams to a 5-6, 4-6 LSC overall record while the Hilltoppers suffer their second loss in a row, moving to 8-3, 6-2 LSC on the season.

St. Edward's stormed out to an early lead in the game, taking a 13-0 lead after Ryan Garza hit a three-pointer. The Rams scored their first points of the game after that as Sam Moore converted a layup before ASU put together a 6-0 run.

Both teams continued to trade buckets during the first half with St. Edward's holding a nine-point lead with 3:47 left to play. Angelo State closed out the half with another impressive run, tallying 12 straight points including a three-pointer by Paul Williams to give the Rams a 38-35 advantage heading into the break.

Williams led the Rams in scoring with 19 points, shooting 5-of-12 while adding five assists and three rebounds. Behind him was Devaughn Thomas with 10 points while Andre Nunley and Godwin added nine points each.

ASU shot 42 percent on the night, edging out the Hilltoppers who finished with a shooting percentage of 38 percent. SEU collected 19 points off of turnovers while the Rams dominated the paint, outrebounding the Hilltoppers 40-36 while scoring 30 points in the paint.

Burone Edwards opened the second with a bucket to extend ASU's lead to five points which was the largest of the game for the Rams.

The Hilltoppers regained the lead with an 8-0 run, hitting back-to-back threes by Jake Krafka. Krafka finished with 14 points for SEU along with two other players to lead the squad.

Williams answered back, scoring five straight points to regain the lead at 49-47. Scores from Nunley, Thomas, and Godwin would keep the score in favor of the Rams before a 6-0 run gave SEU the lead at 63-59 with 1:24 on the clock.

With just over a minute, Sam Baker hit a corner three with a defender close to make it a one-point game. After a stop by the Rams' defense, Godwin hit another three to go up 65-63 before SEU tied it with 12 seconds to go, setting up Godwin's game-winner.

Baker and Edwards each finished with seven points in the game while Salisu Yahaya collected a team-high eight rebounds and Nunley added seven boards.

The Rams will continue Lone Star Conference play next week as Angelo State prepares for another ranked opponent in No. 5 West Texas A&M beginning Thursday, Feb. 4 in Canyon, Texas, before returning to the Junell Center on Saturday.
