SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State football team put together a complete performance against Western New Mexico on Saturday, defeating the Mustangs 62-3 at LeGrand Stadium at 1
st Community Credit Union Field.
With the win, the Rams improve to 4-1 overall while earning their first Lone Star Conference win of the season to make them 1-1 in conference play. For the Mustangs, they fall to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in LSC action.
For the second week in a row, the Rams' defense did not allow a touchdown, holding the Mustangs to a single field goal.
Eric Rascoe led the defense with nine total tackles including three tackles for loss and a sack.
The Rams got on top in the game early, scoring their first touchdown midway through the first quarter as
Nathaniel Omayebu III capped off 60-yard drive with a 19-yard rush up the middle to go up 7-0. Omayebu tallied 92 yards on the day, averaging 6.6 yards per carry.
Toward the end of the first quarter, the Rams found the endzone for their second score, this time through the air as
Alfred Grear caught a screen pass from
Hagen Garvin before breaking away for 43 yards and a touchdown.
Garvin, in his second start for the Rams, followed up his previous pass with another touchdown, finding
Kellen Pachot on a 24-yard pass to give Angelo State a three-score lead over the visitors.
Later in the second quarter,
Josh Quinton picked off a pass by the Mustangs to set up a 37-yard run by
Kason Philips, scoring his first collegiate touchdown to give the Rams a 28-0 advantage.
The Rams added a few more points before the half as
Asa Fuller converted a 39-yard field goal while, with under two-minutes to play in the half, Grear broke off an 86-yard run on the only play of the drive, scoring in just 13 seconds as the Rams took a 38-0 lead into the break. Grear collected 106 yards on the ground with a score, and 43 yards receiving with a touchdown catch.
Angelo State combined for 629 yards of total offense, including a season-high of 353 rushing yards while holding the Mustangs to 166 yards, including 44 yards rushing.
In the third quarter, Fuller added another three points as he converted a 26-yard field goal. He finished 2-of-3 in field goal attempts while finishing a perfect 8-of-8 in PATs.
Midway through the third,
Andrew Pitts returned a punt 80 yards to the five-yard line of Western New Mexico, setting up a two-yard touchdown run by Philips. Tallying a game-high, Philips finished with 124 yards on 15 attempts with two touchdowns.
Later in the quarter, Garvin tallied two more touchdown passes, connecting with
Kyle Bradford for a 76-yard seam pass down the field, and
Rasheen Green for a 28-yard pass as the Rams took a 62-0 lead over the Mustangs. Garvin finished with four touchdowns in the game while completing 11-of-16 attempts for 276 yards.
The Mustangs broke the shutout with just over three minutes to go in the game, hitting a 29-yard field goal.
Green tallied 56 yards receiving on three catches while Pachot also caught three passes for 50 yards. Bradford finished with a game-high 76 yards receiving on his one catch. Defensively,
Hunter Kyle finished with four tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss while
G'Karri McCoy collected four tackles and a sack.
The Rams return on the road next weekend as they travel to Canyon for a Lone Star matchup against West Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 9.
