KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State football team closed out the regular season with a big win, defeating Texas A&M – Kingsville 58-19 on the road on Saturday night at Pepsi Field in Javelina Stadium.
The Rams have now won their last five games to improve to 9-2 overall on the season and 5-2 in Lone Star Conference play. The Rams will now wait to see where they are seeded in the regional tournament as the NCAA DII Football Selection Show is set to air on Sunday, at 4 p.m. CST, on NCAA.com.
The Rams didn't take long to get on the board, driving 74 yards in the opening drive of the game before
Zach Bronkhorst completed a fade to
Noah Massey for a touchdown to go up 7-0.
On the very next drive after forcing a punt by the Javelinas, the Rams scored in less than two minutes, scoring on a four-yard rush by Bronkhorst. He now has eight rushing touchdowns on the season.
ASU extended the lead moments later as
Donavyn Jackson scooped a fumble before returning it 19 yards for a touchdown giving the Rams a 21-0 advantage midway through the first quarter. The Rams have earned a defensive touchdown in each of the last five games including the return by Jackson.
The Javelinas got on the board after completing an 83-yard touchdown pass for their first score of the game.
The Rams answered back immediately, scoring on one play as
Alfred Grear ran 63-yards untouched for another rushing touchdown. ASU converted a two-point conversion to go up 29-7. Grear finished as the leading rusher for ASU, collecting 102 yards on the ground with only five rushing attempts.
ASU collected 546 yards of total offense on the day including rushing for 305 yards, breaking the 300-yard mark for the second time this season. The defense held TAMUK to 315 yards, nearly all through the air as the Rams allowed only 18 yards rushing on the day.
Both teams converted a field goal in the first half as TAMUK hit a 27-yard attempt while
Asa Fuller made a 37-yard attempt to make it 32-10 in the second quarter.
The Rams offense continued to push the ball down the field, holding the ball for nearly six minutes while going 78 yards on 12 plays. Bronkhorst picked up his second touchdown pass of the game, threading the ball through the middle of the field to
Kel Williams for a 14-yard touchdown.
Bronkhorst finished 18-of-27 passing on the day, throwing for 241 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. Massey was the top receiver for ASU, totaling five catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns while
Kellen Pachot finished with 61 yards on five catches.
ASU's defense held the Javelinas to three 3-and-outs in the first half, including back-to-back drives to close out the first half.
Fuller added a few more points to end the half, hitting his second field goal of the game, converting from 49-yards out to take a 42-10 lead into the half.
The Rams picked up where they left off in the first half, scoring on the first drive of the third quarter as Bronkhorst found Massey again, scoring on a 28-yard touchdown pass.
After an interception by Kason Cooper gave the ball back to the Rams, ASU drove 37 yards to extend the lead to 56-10 as
Nathaniel Omayebu III scored on a run from three yards out. Omayebu finished with 66 yards rushing followed by
CJ Odom with 61 yards and
Kason Philips with 57 yards on the ground.
A bad snap close to the endzone gave the Javelinas two points, as TAMUK tackled the Rams in the endzone for a safety. TAMUK did find the endzone through the air again, hitting a 31-yard pass for a touchdown to make it 56-19 in favor of ASU.
The Rams' final points of the game came on a safety as
Micah Flowers sacked the quarterback in the endzone to make it 58-19. Flowers led the Rams with five overall tackles, including two sacks while Jackson and
Weston Bauer each added a sack.
