Denton, Texas – In a rematch of two regionally-ranked squads in the quarterfinals of the LSC Tournament, it was Angelo State who once again claimed a one-goal victory over Texas Woman's on their home pitch, and once again, it was Belles captain Avery McNeme who scored the game-winning goal.
The Belles won a free kick from the outside of the Pioneers' box in the 87th minute, with McNeme stepping up to take. The senior rifled in the set piece into the top corner of the Pioneers' goal which proved to be the difference in the match. The goal was her eighth goal of the season and 17th goal contribution.
"In the first match, they [TWU] were different in defending," said head coach Travis McCorkle about the difference from the first matchup to this one. "They gave us a little bit more space [in the first match] and today, there was no space, and this is kind of typical of a Lone Star Conference Tournament game."
For the match, the Belles out-shot the Pioneers 11-5, with the Belles recording five shots on goal to the hosts' two, with Belles goalkeeper Kira Miller making a pair of saves when called into action on the match.
For the rest of the LSC Tournament, McCorkles says that the team needs to "step up our mentality again; it'll be challenging, Commerce is going to be really physical."
"Our last game was 2-2 and this time, playing at a neutral site, for us it's going to be about recovery and then getting our mindset back into Lone Star Conference tournament play and advancing. Last time [against Commerce], we made a couple of mistakes, and they lead to some goals and so we're going to look to not repeat those things."
The Belles will play seven-seed Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday at DBU, with the Lions advancing with a road upset of second-seeded Midwestern State tonight. The match is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Lone Star Conference Network.
