SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team couldn't hang on to an early lead, falling to No. 5 West Texas A&M 107-77 on Saturday night at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Buffs complete the series sweep over ASU, improving to a 7-1 overall record, 5-1 in Lone Star Conference play, while the Rams move to 5-8, 4-8 LSC on the season.
Angelo State came out strong in the first half, scoring five straight points beginning with a three-pointer from
Burone Edwards. After WT tied the game at 9-9, the Rams scored nine straight points, five points coming from
Paul Williams and the other four from
Andre Nunley, to go up 19-8.
The Rams held on to their lead for a majority of the first half, winning 32-23 with just over five minutes to go in the opening period. Williams led ASU in scoring with 21 points, going 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. Behind him, Nunley tallied 16 points while Edwards finished with 14 points on the night.
West Texas would eventually regain the lead, using runs of five points and nine points to go into halftime ahead 42-36. The Buffs shot 58 percent from the field, going 12-of-31 from three-point range while outrebounding the Rams 39 to 27.
WT took over in the second half, scoring the first 15 points of the period to gain a 21-point advantage over the Rams. The Buffs finished with four players in double-figures, led by Jon'il Fugett and Zach Toussaint with 20 points each.
Devaughn Thomas collected seven points for ASU while he and Edwards both finished with a team-high six rebounds.
The Rams continue action this week as they play another split series, traveling to UT Permian Basis on Thursday, Feb. 11, before playing at home against the Falcons on Saturday.
