Rambelles Season Ends in NCAA Division II South Central Tournament

COMMERCE, Texas – The Angelo State softball team had its season end in a double-elimination South Central Regional tournament, as Angelo State was defeated by the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas in game one, 7-3, and by the Colorado Mesa Mavericks in the second game, 9-2. The Rambelles finished the season with a 33-14 overall record.

Game against Texas A&M-Kingsville:
Genesis Armendariz kicked things off for the Rambelles in the circle as she went three up and three out as the first batter lined out to the shortstop, Armendariz struck the second batter out swinging, and the third out came from a ground ball hit to the shortstop.

The Javelinas scored two runs in the top of the second inning as one Javelina reached on a fielders choics as the runner on third was thrown out at home for the first out. Two singles hit to center and left field scored a run for TAMUK to bring Kingsville to a 1-0 lead over ASU. Another fielders choice gave Angelo State the second out of the inning, allowing the runner on third to cross home plate and bring Kingsville to a 2-0 lead. The Rambelles managed to keep the Javelinas from scoring again as a grounder to the third baseman brought about the third out and sent ASU back to the batters box.

Keilei Garcia was walked, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mykayla Stroud. Jade Strother smashed a home run over the left field fence to tie the game up at 2-2 and register two RBI.

With two outs registered in the top of the third, the Javelinas registered a run to take a 3-2 lead over the Rambelles off of a single through the left side of the field and advancing a runner to third and into scoring position. Angelo State held the runner at third however, as a fly ball was caught by the left fielder to bring the ASU offense back into the batters box.

In the bottom of the fourth, Stroud stepped up to the plate for ASU, smacking a solo home run over the left center field fence to tie the game up again at 3-3.

Texas A&M-Kingsville took control of the game in the top of the seventh inning, scoring four runs and taking a 7-3 lead over Angelo State after scoring one run off of a single hit to right field. A home run hit over the right center field fence scored three runs with no outs registered. Victoria Vasquez came in to pitch relief and struck two batters out swinging while a line drive hit to the shortstop gave the Rambelles one last chance to get their bats going.

Hatty Shope managed to beat the throw to first from the second baseman and advanced to second on a single hit by Ashton Dirner, but the Javelinas offense proved too much for Angelo State as Texas A&M-Kingsville threw Dirner out at second to secure the final out of the inning, defeating ASU 7-3.

Colorado Mesa extended their lead once again in the bottom of the sixth inning, advancing to second and third base off of a throwing error by the Rambelles and scoring a run off of another throwing error by Angelo State to bring their lead back to five, 7-2. Back-to back doubles scored two more runs for the Mavericks to grow their lead to seven over the Rambelles, 9-2. The Rambelles defense managed to keep the Mavericks from scoring again as one batter struck out swinging and the final out of the inning came from a pop-up fly ball to the third baseman.

Angelo State attempted to get their offense going in the bottom of the seventh after Ashlynn Box managed to make it first off of a single to the shortstop, but the Mavericks defense proved too strong for the Rambelles as Box was thrown out at second, Madison Fernandez grounded out to the shortstop, and Garcia grounded out to the third baseman, bringing the game to a close in favor of Colorado Mesa as the Mavericks defeated the Rambelles, 9-2.
