SAN ANGELO – After an overwhelming offensive effort against Colorado Christian on Thursday, the Belles' match against reigning RMAC champions Colorado State – Pueblo proved to be a more laborious and cagier than their season opener.
For the second match in a row, the Belles scored in the fifth minute off a corner kick from
Avery McNeme, with the ball being cleared to the feet of
Katie Detmer, whose effort from outside of the box snuck past the outstretched arms of the Thunderwolves' keeper, giving the San Antonio native her first goal as a Belle in what was her first collegiate start this afternoon.
Whereas the goals and goal-scoring chances flowed in abundance following the Belles first goal on Thursday, the Belles dropped back in defense as Pueblo ramped up their attack after conceding the opener, with the visitors recorded all three of their shots on goal in the 20 minutes following Detmer's goal.
"I just think we didn't have that killer instinct today," said head coach
Travis McCorkle. "But at the same time, it was hot out here today, and it can be hard to make runs off the ball when you're playing this kind of game."
The scored remained 1-0 until freshman
Grace Jordan scored her first collegiate goal in the 86
th minutes to ensure the win for the Belles, being assisted by
Valerie Solis, who recorded her third assist of the weekend.
Goalkeeper
Kira Miller made three saves as she notched her 16
th career shutout.
The two games this weekend saw seven goals scored by seven different Belles, including four different players scoring their first collegiate goal.
Despite two wins and seven goals scored, McCorkle still believes there's more progress to be made.
"I thought our midfield could have kept possession a bit more and done a bit more for us…and I still think we're a bit hesitant in creating chances and I think we've got to be more optimistic and make some runs and ask questions of the other team's defense."
The Belles hit the road later this week for a pair of matches in Oklahoma, facing East Central on Thursday and Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday.
