Rams Open Conference Play with Matchups against Javelinas, Dustdevils

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team continues its homestand this weekend, as they welcome Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International into the Junell Center for the opening of Lone Star Conference play.

The Rams are 3-1 on the season, having won their last two home games – they defeated Arlington Baptist 99-67 on November 19th and defeated Sul Ross State 75-53 this past Saturday.

The Rams feature three players – Reggie Quezada, Kevon Godwin and Fredelin De La Cruz – who are averaging ten or more points per game this season. Quezada, who is averaging 18.3 points per game, is sixth in the LSC in points per game and is shooting 52.7 percent from the field.

Godwin is scoring 13.3 points per game while De La Cruz scored 10.8 points per game; De La Cruz also leads the team with 9.8 rebounds per game, which is second in the LSC.

Defensively, Steve Webb has emerged as the Rams' top defender on the perimeter, as the three-time reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Year leads the team with nine steals this season, seven of which came against Sul Ross State on Saturday. The senior from St. Louis is averaging 2.3 steals per contest this season, fourth in the conference.

SCOUTING THE JAVELINAS
Texas A&M-Kingsville is 4-2 on the season and are 1-1 in neutral/road games this season; their two losses have come against No. 15 Colorado Mesa and Northern State, which was a road contest for the Javelinas.

The Javelinas are led offensively by Isaiah Payne and CJ Smith, who are scoring 14.7 and 14.5 points per contest, respectively. Payne is shooting 58.3 percent from the field and 46.7 percent from three-point range.

The Rams are 58-57 all-time against the Javelinas; last season, the teams split their contests, with the home team claiming the win each time.

SCOUTING THE DUSTDEVILS
Texas A&M International is 5-1 on the season and are 1-1 in neutral/road games this season; they suffered their first loss in their most recent contest, a 65-48 defeat to Alaska Anchorage in the Last Frontier.

This season, they have also defeated No. 15 Colorado Mesa 73-62 in Laredo back on November 19th.

Jermaine Drewey leads the team with 9.2 points per game; despite not featuring a single player averaging 10.0 points per game, the Dustdevils have seven players averaging at least six points per contest. As a team, they are shooting 44.7 percent from the field and 33.7 percent from three. Defensively, they force opponents into 17.8 turnovers per contest.

The Rams are 7-1 all-time against the Dustdevils, as the two teams split their contests a season ago, with the road team claiming the win on both occasions.

Following this weekend, the Rams take on UAFS and Oklahoma Christian next weekend in their first two road contests in LSC play.
