Hogan’s Complete-Game Shutout Leads #18 Rambelles Past Hilltoppers

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team, a team that has relied on their bats for the most part in this young season, took a different approach in a non-conference contest against St. Edward's, this time relying on the right arm of starting pitcher Torrey Hogan to hold the Hilltoppers to only two hits as the Rambelles claimed a six-inning, run-rule victory to close out the George and Ola McCorkle Challenge.

The Hilltoppers led the game off with a double, a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice to load the bases with only one out in the first inning; however, Hogan would strike out the next two batters to strand the bases loaded with Hilltopper runners.

A walk and a pair of singles loaded the bases for the Rambelles in the second inning, with the game's first run scoring through the first of three times shortstop Mykayla Stroud was plunked at the plate.

The Rambelles took advantage of an error and a walk before Keilei Garcia singled to left field with two outs to double the hosts' lead.

Stroud, who led off the fourth inning with a bunt single in her only official at-bat, scored on a Hilltopper error to make it 3-0; Ashlynn Box would draw a walk with the bases loaded to push across another run to increase the lead to 4-0.

An Ashlyn Lerma groundout scored Stroud in the fifth inning to make it 5-0 in favor of the Rambelles.

Garcia, the only Rambelle in the lineup to record a multi-hit game today, would tally another RBI single in the sixth inning to make it 6-0; Stroud would get hit for the third time to drive in a run before Lerma would draw a four-pitch walk to give the Rambelles a run-rule victory.

In the circle, Hogan settled into a groove after a shaky first inning, retiring 12 straight batters from the beginning of the second inning to the end of the fifth.

The Lubbock native improved to a perfect 6-0 on the season, only allowing two hits, both to Hilltoppers leadoff hitter Genisa Marrero-Carter, and no walks while striking out six batters. This marks the first-career complete game shutout for Hogan.

Winners of their last nine games, the Rambelles improve to 10-1 on the season. They are back in action next weekend for the Angelo State Invitational presented by Bahlman Cleaners.
