Rams Comeback Bid Falls Short in the South Central Regional

LUBBOCK, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team played their final game of the 2021-22 season after losing to West Texas A&M 84-76 in the South Central Regional of the NCAA Division II tournament.

The Rams shot 50 percent from the field on the afternoon and 45 percent from beyond the arc. The Buffs out rebounded the Rams 41-37 including 14-3 on the offensive glass. WT would take 74 shots from the field compared to the 56 of ASU.

Devaughn Thomas and Paul Williams both scored 18 points on the afternoon. Lathaniel Bastian had 16 points and 12 boards in the regional.

The two sides traded buckets early on in their third meeting on the season. Dante Moses would knock down a jumper to bring the score 12-11 in favor of the Buffs with 14:15 remaining in the first. West Texas slowly built their lead following a pair of triples, surging ahead 20-13.

Bastian would score four straight before the Buffs would go on an 11-0 run to jump ahead by 16, 33-17. That would be the same lead the two seed would take into the locker room, ahead 40-24 over the Rams.

Tyrell Carroll scored 10 points and dished out nine assists on the afternoon. Moses would round out the scorers for ASU as only five players scored for the them in the contest.

WT came out firing in the second frame, jumping ahead to their largest lead of the game at 21, 52-31. The Rams would not go out without a fight as a triple from Williams would cut the lead to just 12, 55-43, with 11 minutes left on the clock.

The teams battled for the next seven minutes as the Buffs lead remained 12, 69-57, at just under the five-minute mark after Carroll hit a three. The Rams seemed to have the momentum after a Moses dunk brought the game to just five, 71-66 with 1:57 to go.

The Rams would knock down two triples down the stretch, but they would not be enough as West Texas A&M would go 10-10 from the free throw line in the last 1:06 to secure the victory.
