Dominant Offensive Display Highlights #13 Rambelles’ Split with #21 Texas A&M-Commerce

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team, coming off an impressive showing against the nation's top team in UT Tyler, got off to a hot start on Sunday against Texas A&M-Commerce, taking game one in a 13-2 run-rule victory before the Lions scraped a 2-1 win in game two.

With the bases loaded in the first inning against Rambelles starter Genesis Armendariz, the Lions scored the first run of the day; however, Armendariz stranded the bases loaded, only allowing the one run.

Ashlyn Lerma's leadoff bunt single was the only hit for the Rambelles in the first inning, but three walks and a hit batter saw them score a pair of runs to retake the lead.

One of the most impressive offensive innings of the season followed for the Rambelles, who would score nine runs in the second inning to put the result beyond doubt.

Successive singles by Maleya Burns, Lerma, and Ashlynn Box loaded the bases for Madison Fernandez, who drove in two runs with a single of her own.

With two outs, Keilei Garcia struck out but got on base due to a wild pitch, extending the inning for the Rambelles.

Bailey Martinez immediately followed with a 2-RBI single to make it 6-1, chasing Lions starter Alyssa LeBlanc from the circle.

The Lions' relief pitcher would throw a wild pitch to advance runners, and Ashton Dirner, like Garcia, struck out but reached base anyway on a wild pitch, scoring Garcia.

Burns would then record her second hit in as many at-bats in the inning, this hit being a double to left-centerfield to score two more runs. Burns would score on a Lerma infield single, crossing the plate via a Lion error.

Paxton Scheurer finished the scoring for the inning, scoring Lerma on a single, and the Rambelles left the second inning with an 11-1 lead over the nation's 21st-ranked team.

The Lions would produce their second RBI single of the game in the fourth inning to make it 11-2; the Rambelles responded in the bottom of the inning with an inside-the-park home run by Ashlyn Lerma, her second of the season, and a conventional home run by Box, her seventh of the season.

This is the Rambelles' second run-rule victory over a ranked opponent, having run-ruled #6 West Texas A&M back on March 14th.

Armendariz would pick up the win in the circle, allowing five hits and two runs in four innings, striking out eight Lions. Sierra Schottler would throw the final inning in relief, only conceding a single hit.

Emily Otto, the 2019 LSC Pitcher of the Year, would take control of game two for the Lions, not allowing a runner past second base until the fifth inning.

The Rambelles' lone run came in the fifth inning, with Lerma singling up the middle to score Martinez from second base.

The Rambelles only got one run and four hits off Otto while drawing three walks.

Torrey Hogan turned in a solid performance in the circle in game two, scattering five hits and two walks across five innings of work. Hogan struck out five and only allowed one earned run before Armendariz came in for the final two innings in relief, who only allowed a single hit.

The Rambelles are now 25-7 overall on the season and 10-6 in conference play. Next weekend, they are back in action on the road against Midwestern State and Texas Woman's.
