No. 6 Rams Defeat No.12 Colorado School of Mines 30-27 in Overtime

GOLDEN, Colo. – The sixth-ranked Angelo State football team will begin the season 2-0 as they defeated 12th-ranked Colorado School of Mines 30-27 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at Marv Kay Field.

In a rematch of last year's NCAA DII Super Region 4 final, the Rams came out on top this time after Nate Omayebu III tied the game on a 37-yard rush to make it 27-27 before Asa Fuller converted a 36-yard field goal to win it.

The Rams begin the season 2-0 for the third consecutive season while picking up a victory in the first road contest of 2022.

In the first drive of the game, ASU moved the ball 79 yards to the CSM one-yard line but couldn't find a score. After forcing a punt by the Orediggers, the Rams scored first with a field goal by Fuller from 35-yards out.

ASU's defense held Mines scoreless in the first quarter before CSM tied the game with a 43-yard field goal with 11:25 to go in the half. Mines took a 10-3 advantage later in the quarter capping off a 59-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run by Michael Zeman.

On the very next possession, ASU tied the game as Alfred Grear ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run as both teams went into halftime tied 10-10. Grear finished with 81 total rushing yards on five attempts in the contest.

The Rams outdrove the Orediggers 473 yards to 273 yards on offense as ASU finished with 264 rushing yards, averaging over six yards a carry.

After stopping Mines in the opening drive of the second half, ASU took the lead as Kason Philips broke away on a 46-yard touchdown run to make it 17-10. He finished with 71 total rushing yards on five carries.

Mines scored back-to-back touchdowns after that, connecting on a 30-yard touchdown pass for the tie before going up 24-17 with a 27-yard interception return for a score to close out the third quarter.

Fuller hit his second field goal of the game moments into the fourth quarter, converting a 41-yard attempt before CSM answered with a field goal of their own to keep the lead at seven points.

With just under two minutes to go in the game, Omayebu got in the open field while making three Mines defenders miss near the sideline before jumping in for the tying score.

In overtime, ASU's defense held Orediggers to a field goal attempt, missing wide left, setting up Fuller's game-winning kick.

Micah Flowers led the Rams' defense with 10 total tackles while Tre'Darius Colbert finished with eight tackles and a sack.

The Rams continue on the road next weekend as they begin Lone Star Conference action at UT Permian Basin on Saturday, Sept. 17.
