SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State women's soccer team continued their winning ways Thursday evening, earning a 2-1 victory over Colorado Mesa.
The victory sees the Rambelles improve to 4-0-1 on the season. This is the third consecutive year the team has gone unbeaten through the first five games of the season (2021 – five games, 2020 – ten games).
The Belles have been a strike-first team all season, scoring first in each of the first five competitions.
Valerie Solis registered the first shot on target in the first minute, just 26 seconds into the game, forcing a save from the Mavericks keeper.
Shots by
Cindy Rodriguez and
Grace Jordan would be saved before freshman
Hadley Coronado found the breakthrough in the 29
th minute with the first goal of her career.
Kira Miller was called into action, making her only save of the match in the first half. The Belles defensive line only allowed two shots on target in the entire 90 minutes.
The Belles would allow a goal off a corner kick in the 57
th minute of the contest, knotting the score 1-1.
"We need to continue to do better, this team played very direct," said Belles Head Coach
Travis McCorkle, "you have to win headers playing against that tactic."
Just four minutes later the Belles would retake the lead after
Mariah Griffin slotted a ball across the box, finding Rodriguez for her second goal on the season.
"It's great we had such a quick response after allowing that goal," said McCorkle.
The Mavericks would throw numbers forward at the end of the match, but the Belles backline held strong.
"We are still trying to figure out our identity," said McCorkle "the novelty of the new season is wearing off and now it's time to just work."
A matchup with the Fort Lewis Skyhawks will serve as the Belles next contest, their last before the Lone Star Conference schedule begins Wednesday, Sept. 14
th against Texas A&M International.
