SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State football team wrapped up the 2023 regular season with a victory, defeating Western Oregon 31-13 on Saturday night at LeGrand Stadium at 1
st Community Credit Union Stadium.
With the win, the Rams improved to 7-3 overall on the year and 6-2 in Lone Star Conference play.
The Rams scored on their first drive of the game, moving the ball 67 yards before capping off the drive with a touchdown as
Gerald Gardner found
Jayden Jones on a nine-yard pass.
Western Oregon tied the game in the second quarter, scoring on an eight-yard touchdown pass.
Gardner regained the lead for the Rams with his second touchdown pass of the game, connecting with
Kyle Bradford on a 39-yard pass to make it 14-7 with 2:24 to go in the half. He finished with 164 passing yards on the night, going 20-for-35 and two scores.
The Wolves cut the lead to 14-10 with a last-second field goal to end the first half, converting a 45-yard attempt.
ASU edged out WOU with 230 offensive yards to 228 by the Wolves while the Rams won the turnover battle 3-0 with three interceptions.
The Rams scored to start the third quarter as Bradford returned the opening kickoff of the second half 98 yards to make it 21-10.
WOU added another field goal late in the third, converting from 41 yards out.
In the fourth, the Rams added to their lead as
Bradley Larson made a 45-yard field goal. He is now 14-of-15 on the season on field goal attempts, including 4-of-4 from 40-plus yards.
Moments later,
Andrew Pitts picked off the Wolves for the second time in the game, setting up a five-yard touchdown run by
Chad Pharies for the final score of the game.
Eric Rascoe led the Rams defensively with 10 tackles on the night followed by nine from both
Tristan Catan and
Jordan McKinney.
The Rams will await the 2023 NCAA Division II Football Selection Show which is set for Sunday, Nov. 14 at 5 p.m. CST on NCAA.com.
