Rams Hit the Road to Open LSC Play Against Javelinas, Dustdevils

SAN ANGELO - A busy holiday period that saw the Angelo State men's basketball team play three times - twice on the road - in the past week now sees the Rams open up LSC play on the road this weekend with a trip to South Texas to take on Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International.

LAST WEEK IN RAMS BASKETBALL
The Rams made a 19-point comeback against Southern Arkansas last Tuesday to win 64-63 at the buzzer, with the game-winning shot coming from Willie Guy. The Rams then opened their home schedule with a 111-68 victory over Arlington Baptist last Saturday in a game that saw six Rams score in double figures, and the Rams shot 16-for-28 from three-point range. Every Ram that suited up played and found the score sheet in the win over the Patriots. The Rams closed their busy week with an exhibition in Denton against North Texas.

RAMS' DEFENSE
The Rams have held opponents to under 70 points in each of their 14 games dating back to last season; the Rams are 11-3 in that stretch. Opponents are shooting 39.5 percent from the field against the Rams and 35.1 percent from three.

The Javelinas are 2-3 on the season, having claimed wins over South Dakota Mines and Our Lady of the Lake, while all three losses have come to RMAC competition in Chadron State, Colorado Mesa, and Western Colorado.

The Javelinas are averaging 67.8 points per game, shooting 37.3 percent from the field and 29.8 percent from three. CJ Smith (12.8 points per game) and Isaiah Payne (11.0 points per game) average double-digit scoring for the Hogs, while Kendrick Washington leads the team with 1.4 made threes per contest.

Opponents are shooting 42.4 percent from the field against the Javelinas and 28 percent from three. They force opponents into 16.2 turnovers per game, with Smith and Allen Singleton leading the squad with two steals per game.

LAST TIME VS. TAMUK
The Rams are 60-57 all-time against Texas A&M-Kingsville as the Rams beat the Javelinas twice last season, beating them 86-74 to open LSC play in San Angelo before completing the double over the Hogs with a 61-57 win in the LSC Tournament Semifinals. Kevon Godwin averaged 22 points per game last season against the Javelinas.

The Dustdevils are 4-2 on the season, with their two losses coming on the road against South Dakota Mines and Colorado Mesa.

TAMIU averages 76.8 points per game on 47.4 percent shooting and 30.6 percent shooting from three. Mathew Okoye leads the team with 15.7 points per game on 50 percent shooting from the field. John Achebe averages 11 points and six rebounds per contest.

Opponents score 67.7 points per game on 47 percent shooting; opponents are converting a third of their three-pointers against the Dustdevils. • Guard Everson Armstrong recorded his first collegiate points on Nov. 25 against Arlington Baptist, sinking a pair of free throws; he also recorded his first-career assist against the Patriots.
• Forward DJ Basey tied his career-high of three blocks in a game against Fort Lewis on Nov. 10; he attempted a career-high ten field goals against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 25.
• Forward Chris Boekhorst recorded his first-career assist against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 25; he made two shots against the Patriots, tying a career-high.
• Guard Kendrick Delahoussaye scored 14 points in his home debut against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 25; he made four free throws in his debut against Southern Arkansas on Nov. 21.
• Guard Keyshawn Embery-Simpson scored a career-high 30 points in his ASU debut against Fort Lewis on Nov. 10. He went 12-21 from the field and 6-12 from three.
• Guard Kevon Godwin tied his career-high with six assists versus Arlington Baptist on Nov. 25.
