SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team wrapped up their regular season with a tight, intense battle with rivals UT Permian Basin, with the Rams prevailing 61-59 over the Falcons.
The win sees the Rams conclude the regular season with a 23-5 record and a 19-3 record in conference play. The Rams also finish the season undefeated at home with a 13-0 record.
For the game, the Rams held the Falcons to 12.5 percent shooting from three-point range and forced the Rams into 15 turnovers.
A tight back-and-forth contest saw the teams exchange the lead six times, with the score tied an additional seven times.
The second half saw the Falcons pull out a lead as big as six points, but a 13-5 run for the Rams over the last 5:47 of the game saw the hosts pull out the victory.
Tre Mitchell's put-back layup with 82 seconds left regifted the Rams the lead, and
Kevon Godwin's step-back jumper with 20 seconds left sealed the game for the Rams.
Godwin and
Willie Guy led the Rams with 13 points each and recorded three assists. Additionally, Guy shot 4-for-5 from the field and converted all three of his three-point attempts.
Devaughn Thomas scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds, and
Fredelin De La Cruz scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds and four steals.
The Rams will be the three-seed in next week's Lone Star Conference Tournament. Their quarterfinal matchup of the tournament will take place on Friday, March 3
rd, at noon inside the Comerica Center in Frisco.
