SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team announces their first signing of the offseason to reload ahead of the 2023-24 season in Shemar Smith. Smith, a 6'7" forward from Norman, Oklahoma, comes to San Angelo from Connors State College, an NJCAA school in Oklahoma.
"We are very excited to add a player of Shemar's caliber to our roster for the upcoming year," said head coach
Vinay Patel. "I was fortunate enough to coach against Shemar during my time in the Great American Conference, so I have seen first-hand the impact he can make on the basketball court."
Prior to Connors State, Smith averaged 13.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game at East Central as he was named a GAC Honorable Mention honoree.
"Although his season was cut short this year, we have high expectations for him as a player and know his versatility is going to help us on both ends of the floor," said Patel.
Smith's career-high of 27 points came on February 20
th, 2022, against eventual GAC regular season champions Southeastern Oklahoma State.
"We have some big shoes to fill in our frontline, and our staff did an incredible job identifying Shemar early," said Patel. "He has the ability to score inside and out and uses his length to alter plays defensively. Shemar is going to be an exciting player for our fans to watch, and his experience at the Division II level should make the transition smooth to ASU."
