LAREDO, Texas - After a long trip to Laredo, the Angelo State women's soccer team battled their way to a 1 - 0 victory Wednesday evening, behind a goal from
Abby James with 20 seconds left remaining in the match.
With the victory the Rambelles improve to 5-1-3 overall and are now 3-0-1 in Lone Star Conference action. Texas A&M International falls to 3-4-3 on the season and 2-2-1 in conference play.
The Rambelles jumped on the Dustdevils early, having three shots, two on goal, in the first 10 minutes. The Blue and Gold would have seven total shots in an offensive minded first half.
Amber Lockwood would not see much action in the first half only seeing one shot in the 16th minute that resulted in the save.
Madison Bourzikas would have a one on one with a wide-open goal and the shot would be right at the keeper.
Sofia Barrientos would have the last shot of the first half for both sides. The shot would be from inside the box, but Barrientos would just get to much of it resulting in the ball going over the goal.
Five minutes into the second half, Bourzikas would have another shot on goal and the ball would be once again an easy save for the Dustdevils keeper.
The same as the first half the Rambelles would have three shots in the first tin minutes with two of them being on goal.
In the 62nd minute,
Madison Maxey would the hit the cross bar from way-out side the box giving the Rambelles hope once again to find the back of the net in the second half.
With about 20 seconds remaining in the match
Katelin Heise would set up for the free kick. Heise would send a cross into the box where James would make contact on a header that would send the ball over a diving goalkeeper to give the Rambelles a 1-0 victory.
The Blue and Gold would have 16 shots with seven of them being on goal compared to the Dustdevils three shots.
Amber Lockwood and the defense would once again lockdown the opposing offense. Lockwood would extend her conference lead in shutouts with seven in the last nine contest and the 14th of her career as a Rambelle.
From Travis McCorkle: Q: What did you think about the contest after winning the match in the last couple of seconds? "I thought we could have found a better chances in the first half and I thought in the second half we did a really good job. We got frustrated with out how many people they had in the box, with all the possible chances that we could have had throughout the game. In about the last 15 minutes it seemed like it was just free kick after free kick for us and we could just not execute one of those until there was 20 seconds left in the match with the goal from
Abby James. I am glad that we scored in the second half because that is something that we haven't done in a very long time. There is stuff we need to get better at like always, but with us scoring in the second half I really think that could open up our offense. In this match alone we had multiple chances with
Madison Maxey hitting the goal post chances from Sofia and Bourzikas that just weren't clinical enough to result in the goal for us. Our defense was once again great tonight only allowing one shot in the first and two in the second half. Your defense must be doing something right to able to put up those type of numbers."
Q: What are you looking at with Oklahoma Christian coming into town? "I have seen them whoop some teams the team they tied DBU with 3-3 was incredible they have some dangerous players. It's going to be interesting to see what they bring to our game, but we have to be ready with it being at home."
