SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State softball team extended their winning streak to 11 games on Wednesday afternoon as they completed their second Lone Star Conference sweep in as many series, defeating UT Permian Basin 12-1 in a five-inning, run-rule win in game one before closing the series with a 7-0 win over the Falcons.
Between the two games, the Rambelles held the Falcons' offense to one run on five hits, also only issuing one walk and one hit batter.
The Falcons struck first, with back-to-back extra base hits driving in the game's first run.
The visitors held the lead until the bottom of the second inning, when a two-out rally sparked by
Zoey De Baca and
Layni Tanner singles kept the inning alive for
Ashton Dirner, who homered over the left field fence to give the Rambelles the 3-1 lead.
The Rambelles would score five runs in the bottom of the third, starting with a run scoring on a fielder's choice.
De Baca and
Carter Smith would drive in one run each, and
Erin Plunkett capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 8-1.
The Rambelles plated four runs in the fourth inning, doing so on a wild pitch, a bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly and a Falcons error.
Averie Gunther improves to 3-0 with the win inside the circle, striking out three and allowing four hits and a run in four innings of work.
Matie Wolkow threw a perfect inning in relief to clinch the run-rule win.
The Rambelles struck first in the series finale, with a pair of bases-loaded walks sandwiching a Falcons error that plated three runs in the opening frame.
Tatiana Trotter singled to open the third inning before swiping second and scoring on a
Keilei Garcia double. Tanner drove in a run later in the inning on bases-loaded walk, and a run would score on a fielder's choice. Plunkett would close the scoring with a two-out RBI single.
The Rambelles pitching staff, minus Gunther, combined to throw a one-hitter against the Falcons in the series finale.
Torrey Hogan claimed her second win of the season, only allowing one hit and one walk while striking out six in four innings of work. Wolkow threw 1.2 innings in relief, and
Amelia Hatthorn and
Cheyenne Floyd each pitched 0.2 innings to close out the combined staff shutout.
The Rambelles improve to 15-1 on the season and 6-0 in LSC play; they are on the road this weekend to face No. 8 UT Tyler on Saturday and Sunday.
