Denton, Texas – The Angelo State softball team ended their doubleheader against Texas Woman's on Tuesday on a high note as they claimed an 8-4 victory in game two after falling 2-0 in the series opener.
The Rambelles only recorded one hit, which came courtesy of an
Ashton Dirner leadoff double in the sixth inning; the senior got to third base later in the inning but couldn't cross home to break up the shutout.
The only other baserunners for the Rambelles were
Tatiana Trotter in the first inning on a walk and
Averie Gunther after being hit by a pitch.
Cheyenne Floyd, despite the loss, turned in her fourth ten-strikeout performance of the season, only allowing three hits, four walks, and two runs in six innings.
Game two proved to be more fruitful for the Rambelles' lineup. With the Pioneers holding a 2-0 lead after two innings of play, the Rambelles tied the score up in the third inning, pushing the first run across because of a hit by pitch, an error, and a passed ball, and scoring the tying run on a
Keilei Garcia single.
Trotter led off the top of the fifth inning with a home run to give the Rambelles their first lead of the series.
The Rambelles would explode for five runs with two outs in the sixth inning, with the scoring started by
Laylonna Applin's two-run double. Trotter would single in Applin to score another run and Garcia would hit her fifth home run of the season to score both her and Trotter and make the score 8-2.
The Pioneers responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to make it 8-4.
Averie Gunther improves to 4-1 on the season after allowing two unearned runs and six hits across 4.2 innings of work.
Amelia Hatthorn first entered the game in relief of Gunther, getting the final out of the fifth inning to get the Rambelles out of a jam.
After an inning of work,
Matie Wolkow entered in relief of Hatthorn to get out of another jam as she collected her fourth save of the season in 1.1 innings.
The Rambelles are now 16-5 on the season and 7-4 in LSC play. They are back in action tomorrow against TWU as the two teams go for the series win, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
