Offensive Onslaught Propels Rambelles to Two Wins

Conroe, Texas – The Angelo State softball team, just like yesterday, picked up a pair of wins at day two of the DII First Pitch Invitational at the Scrap Yard Sports facility, with the Rambelles defeated MSU Denver 7-1 and Arkansas Tech 9-6; both games featured the Rambelles coming from behind to claim the wins.

The Roadrunners pushed across a run in the top of the first inning and held the lead until the Rambelles batted in the bottom of the second.

With two outs in the second, freshman Laylonna Applin homered over the left-field fence, her first collegiate home run, to tie the ball game up. Erin Plunkett, the next batter, hit an infield single to extend the inning for Zoey De Baca, who singled to right center; Plunkett scored on an error on the relay throw to give the Rambelles a 2-1 lead.

The score remained 2-1 until the fifth inning, where De Baca, Layni Tanner, and Carter Smith singled to load the bases for Averie Gunther, whose single through the left side plated a pair of runs. Keilei Garcia, the following batter, would turn on a ball for her second home run of the weekend, a three-run shot that made the score 7-1.

De Baca and Gunther both recorded multi-hit games for the Rambelles in game one.

Cheyenne Floyd picked up her third win in as many games, allowing six hits, a walk and a run in 5.1 innings of work; Floyd struck out seven Roadrunners inside the circle. Matie Wolkow made her debut in relief of her former McLennan teammate, throwing a perfect 1.2 innings.

Arkansas Tech struck first in game two, plating a run in the top of the first.

Layni Tanner led the Rambelles off in game two by drawing a full-count walk; Carter Smith would triple to left field to score Tanner and tie the game. Tatiana Trotter tripled later in the inning to score two more runs before she would score on an Applin single later in the inning.

The Golden Suns scored once in the second, three times in the third and once in the fourth to take a 6-4 lead.

Tanner would record a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning to cut the Rambelles' deficit in half.

Gunther and Garcia led the fifth inning off with a hit by pitch and a double, respectively, to put two runners in scoring position for Trotter, who drove both runners in with a double to left-center.

Trotter would score later in the inning on an Erin Plunkett double to make it 8-6; Trotter drew a bases-loaded walk an inning later to expand the Rambelles' lead to 9-6.

Garcia, Trotter, and Plunkett each tallied multi-hit games, with Trotter driving in five of the nine Rambelles runs.

Amelia Hatthorn picked up her first win in the Blue and Gold, pitching 4.1 innings of relief of starter Torrey Hogan. Hatthorn allowed three hits and two runs while striking out five Golden Suns. Wolkow recorded the final out for her first save for ASU.

The Rambelles are now 4-0 on the season; they close their weekend out tomorrow morning against No. 19 Rogers State and Colorado Mesa.
