AUSTIN – The Angelo State softball team turned in a big performance in game one of their doubleheader, winning 11-1 over St. Edward's before the Hilltoppers rebounded to avoid the sweep with a 3-1 win in the series finale this afternoon at Diane Daniels Field.
Averie Gunther and
Carter Smith reached base on a walk and a bunt single, respectively, to open the day, with both advancing into scoring position.
Tatiana Trotter's sacrifice fly scored Gunther and
Keilei Garcia's double to left center would score Smith to make it 2-0 after the first inning.
Trotter and Garcia would reach base to lead off the third inning, with Trotter scoring on a
Zoey De Baca single and Garcia would cross home on a fielder's choice.
Ashton Dirner would drive in the third run of the inning to make it 5-0 in favor of the Rambelles.
Smith led off the fourth inning with a double, advancing on a Hilltopper error and scoring on a Trotter single.
Walks by Garcia and
Lauren De La Cruz loaded the bases for De Baca, whose sacrifice fly drove in the Rambelles' seventh run.
The score stayed 7-1 until the final frame, when the Rambelles scored four more runs.
Laynee Crooks led the inning off with a walk before singles by De Baca and
Layni Tanner loaded the bases.
Erin Plunkett singled in the first run of the inning before Gunther's sacrifice fly scored the second run.
Malloree Smith's single scored another run and a
Laylonna Applin sacrifice fly capped the scoring for the Rambelles.
Amelia Hatthorn improved to 3-0 on the season, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing two hits and one run while striking out a pair of Hilltoppers.
Torrey Hogan threw the final 2.2 innings in relief, allowing three hits and striking out four.
Game two saw the Rambelles commit four errors as the offense was only held to three hits. The lone run came in the seventh inning off a De Baca sacrifice fly. Trotter recorded two of the Rambelle hits while Applin pitched in the other hit, as well as scoring on the sacrifice fly.
Cheyenne Floyd took the loss, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out three in six innings of work.
The Rambelles are now 29-11 on the season and 20-10 in conference play. They return home next weekend to kick off their final homestand of the season when they host Cameron.
